I find Martin way more annoying for his obnoxious and hypocritical attitude about fanfiction than anything having to do with the sanctity of the fantasy genre. And I don't even read ASOIAF fanfic.

Eh, I don't care what his views on fanfic are. It doesn't have any affect on me. Is it hypocritical? Yeah, but at the end of the day I don't care. The "stop liking what I don't like" people are far more annoying to me. So are the people who like someone ruined a genre.

So are the people who act like*

Oops.

Well in the fanfic case, that would actually be a thing to lay at GRRM's door. As in, those are his actual opinions, so if you find them annoying by all means certainly direct your displeasure at him. At least then it's not some bogus complaint about "ruining fantasy" when all he did was write some books.

Exactly. If you have a problem with his views on fanfic, voice them. The whole idea that someone can "ruin" and entire genre of whatever be it books, movies, etc with an seriee or lone entry is just ridiculous.

Not to mention that complaint places an overwhelming amount of importance on Martin and the ASOIAF series which... shouldn't that the opposite of what we want?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucking exactly! Take Twilight for example, I didn't like it or the way it portrayed vampires but never did I think it ruined vampires. Why? Because there's still a shit ton of vampire media that fits my preference and one franchise won't ruin them for me.

Have you ever read the rant about fanfiction from one of his fans (the infamous Linda)? Please enjoy and laugh:

Aww, look at little fantastwatcollective, trying to defend fan-fiction. Its kind of funny. No, not kind of. Its really hilarious.

Just accept that you’re a sad cunt for supporting an activity that most likely is illegal (yeah, I know it hasn’t been proven either way in court, but there’s plenty of well-informed opinions that support that it would found be illegal if tested) and definitely very rude and a good sign of someone being a shitstain on the world when it goes against an author’s wishes.

George owns his setting. He owns his characters. He has the right to license any projects he wants and to deny licenses to other. Playing favourites? Aww, sad that you can’t write your Jon/Robb porn to get off all on you own? Seriously, get your cunt-stained fingers off characters that you have no right to use.

Also, for fuck’s sake, learn English. Fan-fiction. Notice the fiction part? Its not art (that’s fan-art, see the trend?), its not anything else that isn’t fiction.

I know there are some books there that have been accused of being roleplay sessions turned into stories, but for the most part…yeah, not the same thing. Fictional, maybe, but not fiction.

I might also add, not that my intended audience has enough reading comprehension to get it, that we do not use book characters on our game simply because its something most authors — even when they approve of their settings being used — are uncomfortable with.

How about you go write some slashfiction about your neighbour’s children? I am sure you can masturbate to that too."
