This! I don't even care for the books, but this attitude is annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I find Martin way more annoying for his obnoxious and hypocritical attitude about fanfiction than anything having to do with the sanctity of the fantasy genre. And I don't even read ASOIAF fanfic.

Eh, I don't care what his views on fanfic are. It doesn't have any affect on me. Is it hypocritical? Yeah, but at the end of the day I don't care. The "stop liking what I don't like" people are far more annoying to me. So are the people who like someone ruined a genre.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
So are the people who act like*

Oops.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well in the fanfic case, that would actually be a thing to lay at GRRM's door. As in, those are his actual opinions, so if you find them annoying by all means certainly direct your displeasure at him. At least then it's not some bogus complaint about "ruining fantasy" when all he did was write some books.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

Exactly. If you have a problem with his views on fanfic, voice them. The whole idea that someone can "ruin" and entire genre of whatever be it books, movies, etc with an seriee or lone entry is just ridiculous.

Have you ever read the rant about fanfiction from one of his fans (the infamous Linda)? Please enjoy and laugh:

Aww, look at little fantastwatcollective, trying to defend fan-fiction. Its kind of funny. No, not kind of. Its really hilarious.

Just accept that you’re a sad cunt for supporting an activity that most likely is illegal (yeah, I know it hasn’t been proven either way in court, but there’s plenty of well-informed opinions that support that it would found be illegal if tested) and definitely very rude and a good sign of someone being a shitstain on the world when it goes against an author’s wishes.

George owns his setting. He owns his characters. He has the right to license any projects he wants and to deny licenses to other. Playing favourites? Aww, sad that you can’t write your Jon/Robb porn to get off all on you own? Seriously, get your cunt-stained fingers off characters that you have no right to use.

Also, for fuck’s sake, learn English. Fan-fiction. Notice the fiction part? Its not art (that’s fan-art, see the trend?), its not anything else that isn’t fiction.

I know there are some books there that have been accused of being roleplay sessions turned into stories, but for the most part…yeah, not the same thing. Fictional, maybe, but not fiction.

I might also add, not that my intended audience has enough reading comprehension to get it, that we do not use book characters on our game simply because its something most authors — even when they approve of their settings being used — are uncomfortable with.

How about you go write some slashfiction about your neighbour’s children? I am sure you can masturbate to that too."

I find him gross because of this.

Don't fans write pretty the same things on their blogs about actors/characters though? People have libidos, sometimes it's gross to think about when they're old and fat but, oh wait, we're not supposed to judge, are we?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's totally different because reasons!

Fucking double standards

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course not. Any bad behavior is okay if we can rationalize it!

How dare an older white man that we don't find sexually appealing be attracted to women whose entire job was to look attractive! (Older white men that we DO find sexually appealing are allowed to do and say pretty much whatever they want and we'll smile and act giddy about it, though.)

Ew.

That's a bit beyond creepy. If I were any of those ladies, I would feel genuinely violated.

If you were trying out for the role of Shae, you'd best get used to the idea that sweaty fanboys are going to be choking their weasels to your tit shots.

Better not try acting as a career then.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I don't have a horse in this race and get that everyone says stuff like that. But to be fair, I think it's different to say stuff in a fandom, online setting than it is as a public statement. I say a lot of shit as anon, but it would seem grosser if I said them publicly as a celebrity. Bad PR at best, kinda bad judgment statement.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
GRRM probably thinks of his livejournal the same way most people think of theirs -- just happens that he has a much, much bigger readership. Those readers are his fans, though. It's not like he said it in an interview that was then broadcast on a public channel.

Honestly, I find all this pearl clutching so ridiculous. Sex is sex is sex, most of us want it, we should be able to talk about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
"I've just reviewed the tapes of twelve young women reading for the part of Shae.

Excuse me. I need to go take a cold shower now."

Hahaha oh wow, no wonder the episode he wrote for season 3 had that fucking terrible scene where Theon gets sexually assaulted by 2 attractive women (played off as titillating and focusing on their bodies of course), Talisa spending an entire scene naked, and tons of pointless sex talk. Dude really is a creepy old man.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That scene was fucking disgusting. But kinda was a good representation of the entire series, imo.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
If you read that scene as sexual assault you're stupid. it's obviously supposed to be another mindfuck, USING Theons overly developed libido. He does want to bang them, because sex is one of his safe zones, where he's only ever had positive experience. (Plus he's a POV character, so we see their bodies through his lense, the way he sees women.) He is offered a chance of comfort, which is then completely twisted. Just like when jaime drank that "water" the Bolton-henchman guy offered him.
Yes, he is a prisoner, but no, they do not rape him. If a death row inmate is allowed a visit by a prostitute, it's not rape either. He could have refused them. What he could not refuse was castration.

The Talisa naked thing was eyecandy, sure. We do get some serious ass of Jaime somewhere 'round that too, though, the show's pretty balanced with that. I can very much appreciate her pretty, curvy, naked body. The way the sex was depicted, though, was the foreshadowy meaningful sex trope you often find when characters either die the next day, or get pregnant. It's not meaningless, it's how film communicates certain plot points.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
lol of COURSE you took issue with the women being naked and not the fact that Theon was tortured and castrated
