Did he set out to change the genre? Redefine it? Seems like he just wrote a series of books the way he wanted to, and then they somehow blew up and became overwhelmingly popular. These cries of "Oh my precious fantasy genre!" are kind of pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really when you consider how his fans are a bunch of smug rabid harpies that swoop down from the sky to screech at anyone who doesn't like ASoIaF because "ZOMG HDU YOU ARE NOT A TRUE SFF FAN IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT! ASOIAF IS BETTER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE BECAUSE ITS GRIM-N-GRITTY AND YOU'RE TOO STUPID TO TRULY APPRECIATE IT!!1!1!"

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
But does that actually do anything to the fantasy genre as a whole? I mean, are other authors actually intimidated into writing GRRM-N-GRITTY (hur hur) as well? Are other readers persuaded into drinking that Kool-Aid and no longer support other series?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that the way you're acting?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Mte.

Rabid fans and rabid haters are two sides of the same annoying coin.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a fan. I know plenty of other fans. I follow a bunch of fans on tumblr. I have literally never encountered this attitude; I've found WAY more people who sound like you and/or spit nails and fiery brimstone at fans for daring to like such an ANTI-WOMAN CRAPFEST OF A SERIES !!!!!1111!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You haven't met the hardcore fans on Westeros.org...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why someone would go to a fan site for something they didn't like. As long as the rabid fans stay in their little corner, it should be fine.

IDK, I've found people on FS and tumblr to be quite understanding that I gave it try (book and tv show, both out of curiosity) and did not like it at all. I've yet to be screeched at for it.

Maybe it's the way you present yourself?

I've encountered some of the annoying fans. In a completely civil discussion once where I said that I had tried ASoIaF but found it not to my taste, somebody gave me this disgusted look and said "but you're intelligent" . And that's not the only time. So fwiw, my anecdata.
caerbannog: (Default)

[personal profile] caerbannog 2014-01-06 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Have to say I don't see what someone's intelligence should do with it. O_O That's pretty shitty of them, I hope you gave them an equally disgusted look back.

But I'd say all fandoms have a shitty, pushy fan or two. I have similar wary feelings for Dr Who fans. They seem more prevalent.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! I've encountered this type of attitude in regards to LOTR. I remember on one message board, one person was absolutely boggled that their "otherwise intelligent" friend didn't like LOTR.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you telling me that the tumblir community is largely made up of women? If so, that's something I didn't know. There are, of course, many female I&F and GOT fans on Westeros, Winter Is Coming, Tower of the Hand, and the other major sites... are you saying that tumblir is made up of women "driven" from those sites?

These are not rhetorical questions. Honestly, so far as I know, the only people being expelled from Westeros of the other sites I've mentioned are ones who have engaged in trolling, spamming, or abusive behavior of one sort of another."

Curiously I'm not a ASoIaF fan and I don't get this.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This! I don't even care for the books, but this attitude is annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I find Martin way more annoying for his obnoxious and hypocritical attitude about fanfiction than anything having to do with the sanctity of the fantasy genre. And I don't even read ASOIAF fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

Eh, I don't care what his views on fanfic are. It doesn't have any affect on me. Is it hypocritical? Yeah, but at the end of the day I don't care. The "stop liking what I don't like" people are far more annoying to me. So are the people who like someone ruined a genre.

Have you ever read the rant about fanfiction from one of his fans (the infamous Linda)? Please enjoy and laugh:

Aww, look at little fantastwatcollective, trying to defend fan-fiction. Its kind of funny. No, not kind of. Its really hilarious.

Just accept that you’re a sad cunt for supporting an activity that most likely is illegal (yeah, I know it hasn’t been proven either way in court, but there’s plenty of well-informed opinions that support that it would found be illegal if tested) and definitely very rude and a good sign of someone being a shitstain on the world when it goes against an author’s wishes.

George owns his setting. He owns his characters. He has the right to license any projects he wants and to deny licenses to other. Playing favourites? Aww, sad that you can’t write your Jon/Robb porn to get off all on you own? Seriously, get your cunt-stained fingers off characters that you have no right to use.

Also, for fuck’s sake, learn English. Fan-fiction. Notice the fiction part? Its not art (that’s fan-art, see the trend?), its not anything else that isn’t fiction.

I know there are some books there that have been accused of being roleplay sessions turned into stories, but for the most part…yeah, not the same thing. Fictional, maybe, but not fiction.

I might also add, not that my intended audience has enough reading comprehension to get it, that we do not use book characters on our game simply because its something most authors — even when they approve of their settings being used — are uncomfortable with.

How about you go write some slashfiction about your neighbour’s children? I am sure you can masturbate to that too."

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I find him gross because of this.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't fans write pretty the same things on their blogs about actors/characters though? People have libidos, sometimes it's gross to think about when they're old and fat but, oh wait, we're not supposed to judge, are we?

I don't know, I don't have a horse in this race and get that everyone says stuff like that. But to be fair, I think it's different to say stuff in a fandom, online setting than it is as a public statement. I say a lot of shit as anon, but it would seem grosser if I said them publicly as a celebrity. Bad PR at best, kinda bad judgment statement.

"I've just reviewed the tapes of twelve young women reading for the part of Shae.

Excuse me. I need to go take a cold shower now."

Hahaha oh wow, no wonder the episode he wrote for season 3 had that fucking terrible scene where Theon gets sexually assaulted by 2 attractive women (played off as titillating and focusing on their bodies of course), Talisa spending an entire scene naked, and tons of pointless sex talk. Dude really is a creepy old man.

This.
