Inspired by Secret 09

What are your favorite canons led by female characters and/or prominently featuring relationships between female characters? Read any good fics lately that fit the same bill?

The first canons that come to my mind are Xena: Warrior Princess, Sailor Moon and The Powerpuff Girls, all big parts of my childhood. These are quickly followed by Gunnerkrigg Court, which I've only recently gotten into, Jem and Kim Possible. I don't have any fic recs off the top of my head, but I'll see about collecting some.

The Middleman. The two main characters were a woman and a man (with the woman getting far more of the focus), and the woman acquired a boyfriend partway through the season, but it was always clear that her female best friend was the most important person in her life.

The Middleman TV show does not get enough love, imo. The relationships in that show were so perfect, between everyone.

I almost mentioned this in my comment but I went with a different cancelled ABC Family show. The Middleman is very much Wendy's story, and Lacey is her #1 person. I can't wait for my pre-ordered new MM story to come, aaaaah!

Man do I miss that show. Everyone in it was excellent. Everyone. (And yes, Wendy and Lacey had a lovely relationship, and were VERY shippable.)

Orphan Black! Although my favorite part miiiight be Allison and Fee's unlikely friendship...

On the non-SF side, I'll go with Gilmore Girls (but seasons 6-7 never happened though) and ASP's other excellent series, the lamentably cancelled Bunheads.

I just started poking around the Yuletide collection, and there are a couple of pretty great fics for The Heat - the buddy-cop movie that came out last summer starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

Mercedes Lackey's Tarma and Kethry

Tamora Pierce's Keladry and friends and Daja and friends

Anne Mccaffey's Mellony

Katniss and Johanna (they totally count right?)

Ummmmm. Mind blank on anymore.

Early Resident Evil games. There aren't many relationships between female characters, but the female leads all kick massive amounts of ass.

Also, Sailor Moon. Always, always Sailor Moon.

A lot of the stuff in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series. She's got loads of pretty awesome female characters, and a bunch of them lead their own books. I just really love that series in general :)

I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've read from the femgenficathon master lists.

Mistresses is supposed to be good, and it's centered around the friendship between four women.

A number of Mercedes Lackey books feature female leads and/or strong friendships between female characters. [Though I will add that I tend to steer away from her later Valdemar books since they seem to be going down in quality, imo - but the earlier [before the current series of them] are great, and her Elemental Masters and 500 Kingdoms series are *awesome*, and always seem to have great female characters.]

Card Capture Sakura

If you don't mind short stories then I can't recommend the Chicks in Chainmail anthologies enough. The whole point of those books is to have female leads being awesome - usually with a heavily female [or all female] cast. Plus their hilarious [in a very good way].

Ditto on Xena and Sailor Moon. I'd add Madoka Magica in there too. And on the way lesser known end of the scale, Petite Princess Yucie.

Madoka Magica.

Marie Brennan's Doppelganger books are really good too. In fact, the vast majority of the principle cast is female. Which, in swords and sorcery fantasy, is a very nice thing to run into.

Birds of Prey

My very first femslash ship was from this comic. Sadly, I do not have any recs.

Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23 was surprisingly great in this regard, too.

I love Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy series--basically, autobiographical fiction about the author's childhood and young adulthood in Minnesota, circa 1895-1914--and wish it were better known so that there'd be more fic for it, especially for secondary characters like the protagonist's sisters. Margaret most of all--she's so mysterious--but Julia too.
