Re: The injuries thread... (Major tl;dr ahead).

My worst injury story has a bit of a back-story to it. I was twelve years old and was attending a poorly-run, week-long horseback-riding day-camp. Earlier in the week, a new horse named Princess arrived, and since all of the other mares had foals and were in a pasture together, Princess was put in with the geldings. In addition to having such horrible conformation and choppy gaits that she was physically painful to ride, she also had a vicious streak, especially towards the other horses. After two days of kicking, biting and charging her pasture mates, the barn owners/camp managers came up with the brilliant plan...of putting her in with the mares and foals. When Princess inevitably attacked a four-month-old filly named Phoenix and chased her into a fence, which ripped her face open. She needed twelve stitches. Obviously, this mare had no business being near foals, so they quickly decided...

...to leave her in there with them. The next day (which was also the last day of the camp), I was sent to bring Phoenix's mother Cappy out for a grooming, and lo and behold, Princess started attacking Phoenix again while I was leading Cappy to the gate. Cappy pinned her ears back and threw her head up in the air threateningly. Princess wasn't going to let challenge like that slide, so she whirled around and the last thing I remember after that was her rapidly backing up towards us while I tried to duck under Cappy's neck. I was too slow.

I'm not sure how long I was out, but the next thing I knew I was being pulled to my feet by one of the instructors, who later said I couldn't have been unconscious because my eyes were open. My grandmother soon came and took me my to my primary care physician, who said it was only a mild concussion and that I should hold off riding again for a week. Naturally, I was back that afternoon to win the end-of-camp show on the back of an asshole pony who would only (grudgingly) behave for me, because I am powered by spite. Oh, and not once did the camp-runners apologize or admit their mistake, and for the next camp they held that summer (which my cousins went to in spite of my warnings), they were letting the beginner kids (around 7-ish) ride the pony stallions they'd bought between camps, which ended up with several other kids being knocked off their own ponies when the stallions tried to mount them while on a trail ride. Amazingly, no one ever sued them, and I kind of wish my parents had because because, although the only physical marker of the incident is a small nick on one ear, it was many years before I could walk into a pasture without having a panic attack, which was quite inconvenient, given that my horse stayed exclusively in the pasture because he hates being cooped up in a stall. So...yeah.
