Resetting IP address

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 12:47 am (UTC)(link)Entirely inaccurate. I lost power at my house for a couple days, and when it came back, I had a new IP address. Cable modems aren't automatically static -- in fact, my provider will only provide static IP addresses to businesses, not the average person.

Re: Resetting IP address
(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)The last time I did this, a little more than a year ago, I asked them and the guy just said to unplug it for 24 hours. Which is what I did, I just don't remember/know if just pulling the plugs from the wall socket was enough (seems like it would be) or if I actually had to disconnect every cord.
But I'm trying to get back to a comm where the mods and about a third of the users are whiny-ass children in adults' bodies but the other two-thirds are pretty awesome -- or at least do a good job of hiding their batshittery.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 07:44 am (UTC)(link)Eh, it's probably for the best that it didn't reset.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 12:54 am (UTC)(link)have you tried turning off for a few minutes (five ought to do) and then turn on again your modem thing? physically unplug if it's not wireless?
Re: Resetting IP address
(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 01:46 am (UTC)(link)If 1. does not work, It's not the modem, it's the router. Probably lost all the settings and reverted back to factory defaults. And/or locked out your MAC address. Reset the router (pin in the hole in the back/bottom), access the router's network page (varies for each model, check your documentation), make sure your comp's MAC address is on the exceptions list, and/or the router is set to broadcast, if you've disabled the security. Check that the lights on the modem are OK, cable to the router is good, lights on the router are green, restart your comp, and it should pick up the network. Make sure the password you set on the router's page (if you set one--you really should set one) matches the password in the network connection on the comp.
