Steam sale? Also, Skyrim mods.

[personal profile] elialshadowpine 2014-01-07 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
So there was a Steam sale over NY-ish (I happened on it totally by accident because my long distance gf started squeeing in me over IM about her hubby buying her Skyrim, I made a comment about needing to watch for sales... and she was like "There's a SALE! GO LOOK")... anyone happen to get any goodies? :)

I found Dishonored for under $10 (which I have been hearing great things about from certain posters here on F!S for awhile, so I figured while it's cheap...), the Bioshock trilogy for something like $20 or $30, Tomb Raider (the new one), and the Skyrim Legendary game. (which I figured was worth an extra $5 to get over the basic since if either myself or my married partner liked it, we'd want the extras, so... yeah). I had a bit of splaining to do in the morning when my partner logged into Steam and saw the extra games... lol. (Not bad explaining! Just... "Um, wtf, why are there several new games in our library?" and my explaining the Steam sale.) I'm not entirely sure when I'll have time to play all these, but...

Which leads to a question! I know we have a lot of Skyrim fans here. What would you guys suggest for must-have mods? I've looked around at some of the articles for recommended mods, and most seem directed at somebody who is a much more advanced user. I'm looking mostly at graphical related mods, esp for ones that provide better looking graphics and models (particularly for female characters; most of what I have done in other games is adding different hairstyles, better make-up, different face models, etc). Not looking for anything that requires "jump in the deep end", but from looking around, it's been pretty hard to figure out what exactly fits in that category and doesn't. TY for any suggestions :)

Not a direct rec but... Check out the brodual channel on YouTube. They've reviewed a lot of awesome mods so there should be something to your tastes, and they're pretty professional about it, which is more than can be said for a lot of mod review channels.

I too got pulled by dishonoered. Also got that Long live the Queen game Nurse has been telling us all to get... and the Doom BFG edition cause I liked that game and wouldn't mind a playthrough again now with a PC that can handle graphics. Been meaning to get Organ trail and Skullgirls so added them too.

Also dust cause it was on sale and looked neat.

As for Skyrim casual/graphical mods (I tend more towards the other kind myself honestly), I like Real rain extended, Lightning during thunder storms, Additional music project 1 and 2, The enhanced cities line, Static Mesh improvement mod (1-3), Splash of Rain, Better Dynamic Snow and the high textures pack but you probably already got those.

Oh, and here, just look at what I got.

Community seems to be down right now or I'd link you to my workshop. Expect an edit or additional reply.

Also, the most important graphical mod, the dragon improver!

I got the Rise of the Triad remake for a few bucks!

And I bought Dark Souls for a couple people.

Man I really hope you like Dishonored, I love it!

I can't remember the aesthetic mods i use off the top of my head, but a lot of them are from here:

They're in there somewhere, textures, mods, settings, different colours for beasts.

there's a good setup of nexus mods here that i think are really neat. i can't personally endorse them though since i only use mods on the steam workshop (i move around computers almost daily so nexus mods are inconvenient).

i have over a hundred skyrim mods installed but here are some of my favourites:
- space core
- all of the enhanced town mods (there's links to the others in the description)
- dragon falls manor
- auto unequip arrows (this is just an aesthetic thing imo but i find it really useful)
- followers can relax

aaaaand steam crapped out again. so much for that. steam's been a pile of shit lately tbh
anyway i'd recommend going to the workshop and checking out the top rated mods, they're usually really neat. if you have a permanent place to play then nexusmods are good too, there's just a little extra effort involved in installing their mods.

If you can get them to work. I've tried everything given to troubleshoot it and it *still* won't run for me.

nexusmods? because i've had similar issues but i'm really unfamiliar with how nexus mods work in general. you have to dl the nexus client or something and then the mods, idk. it seems like a big hassle especially for someone like me who's at university and plays in a gaming lab.

if it's the workshop being fussy for you it's probably because steam in general is rubbish. i haven't had issues with workshop mods not working except in cases where i had other mods that conflicted with them. (i also have a mod installed that recently caused the atmosphere music to stop playing? and i can't figure out which one it is so that sucks but other than that they've been pretty good for me)

AYRT [And not the OP]

Yeah, Nexus Mods - I've never had an issue with steam, but I can't get Nexus to work at all. Which kind of sucks, since there are some awesome mods on there that aren't on steam. [And yeah, you have to DL the client then the mods - but it's the client that won't start up for me so, I just went with what's on Steam.]

... I didn't even know there was such a thing as Steam Workshop.

Okay, after being totally confused and then finding out that just by subscribing, you download them... um... is this across Steam accounts, even on another computer? Because my partner is also playing, and I'm not sure they'd be happy to find a whole bunch of mods randomly installed. LOL

Yeah, I have seen a lot of instructions for installing Nexus Mods so I've been a little wary there...

it's not across accounts, as far as i'm aware, but it is stored in the steam cloud (i guess?) so even if you play on a different computer the mods will install on that computer when you start up skyrim. but i think it stays on your account specifically. if your partner has their own account then i they shouldn't end up with those mods.

you just click subscribe and then when skyrim starts up on the splash page you'll see at the bottom a little message that says downloading mod or something. after they download you press play and they should be working.

Sorry, that's what I meant. Whee medication. I meant that every user on the Steam account would have those mods, which sounds like is the case (much like the Curse client... unfortunately, unlike Curse, which is $30 a year, Steam is ... far too expensive to have separate copies of the games for my partner and myself, especially when they are new games).

[personal profile] saku 2014-01-07 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
yep, but there's a super easy way to get around the hassle if your partner doesn't want them. on the splash page there's a link that says "data files" i think. if you click on it it'll show you a list of the mods you've downloaded through the workshop. you and anybody else that uses the steam account can enable and disable them whenever you want.

Totally off-topic, but your girlfriend is married? That's kind of... Odd. I mean, open marriages and different strokes for different strokes and all, but still.

My girlfriend's boyfriend is married. It's really not that unusual in poly relationships. If everyone's open and honest it can work out really well.

Hee, figures the one time I don't make it explicit, someone asks. We are all polyamarous, so everyone knows. :)
