The effects look worse because you're older now.

You can definitely complain about the thinner plot (THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR TRYING TO MAKE A SHORT CHILDREN'S BOOK SPAN THREE MOVIES) but the effects aren't at all worse.

the effects DO look worse-- I don't mean that the CGI is bad, of course; I just mean that there's so freaking much of it that it all looks like a bland mush. So they look worse; there are no points of interest.

Yeah. I mean, lotr had its moments of sweeping CGI, but they were spread out and relatively far between. Every other scene in DoS was full of some effect of the other. I'd catch myself zoning out over and over because my brain just went blarh, more of the same.

Right? Who even cares about effects when you have to deal with such ridiculous plot padding? At some points I was even grateful for the CGI, at least it gave me pretty things to look at while the story dragged on.

I dunno. When I watch the LOTR movies now, the special effects still impress me because I think they did a better job of balancing CGI with other techniques, foremost of which was relying heavily upon the New Zealand landscape. To me, the Hobbit movies look less textured, the colors look a little harsher and more cartoonish, and it no longer looks like you could step right into the screen. I still like the movies, but miss the attention to detail the LOTR trilogy had.
