Not trying to defend Smaug (haven't even the seen the movie, and not sure I'm going to) but from what I've seen of the concept design, his hands are at the wrists, not the elbows, much like pterosaurs which used similar wing-hands to walk quadrupedally as well as fly.

Still, it was confusing - I thought his wings were attached to his front legs and then I saw he had *four* legs plus wings/hands
