The CGI...

Good Lord, Smaug was so shitty. I don't know who fucking designed him, but I wanted to scream - he just looked so...bad.

I mean, what the hell was up with his face? And his wings with the hands at the elbows, ugh. His wings seemed too far up on his body to actually support his weight when he took flight, it was like they were at his shoulders if he were a person instead of his side.

As a dragon enthusiast, I could not get over his design. I mean, if someone has some good pictures of what he looks like in stills (since he was always in motion when you saw most of him) I might be willing to reconsider, but in motion he has such a sloppy and confusing design.

I guess they figured we'd all be too thrilled about Cumberbatch's voice to care about how crap their design was.

I am so sick of Cumberbatch

Ugh, yes.

Not trying to defend Smaug (haven't even the seen the movie, and not sure I'm going to) but from what I've seen of the concept design, his hands are at the wrists, not the elbows, much like pterosaurs which used similar wing-hands to walk quadrupedally as well as fly.

Oh. That makes more sense.

Still, it was confusing - I thought his wings were attached to his front legs and then I saw he had *four* legs plus wings/hands

Huh. I actually liked his design, particularly that he had 4 limbs instead of the 6 typically seen on dragons, with the wings as the front limbs a la bats and pterodactyls.

(I went to find a still/concept design to double check, but the only ones I can find from the movie are of just his head, or of Cumberbatch doing motion capture - which is amusing, but not helpful.)

Oh my god I am the opposite of you. I thought Smaug was a serious achievement. At least, in 2D/24fps, which is how I'm seeing all these things, because Jackson doesn't know how to use 48fps or 3D. (IM rather detailed O.)

He seemed fine to me. Typical fantasy dragon except ginormous, and I admit I was slightly disappointed by that since a part of me wanted a more radical design. But I knew I shouldn't have been expecting any Skyrim shit here, since it's Tolkien and all. (Though some sources say Tolkien-esque dragons shouldn't be limbless, like giant serpents with wings, though I imagine that'd be awkward on screen.)

Yeah, dragon design was one area where Skyrim really excelled. Their bodies just worked beautifully and I loved the way they moved on the ground with their wings as forearms.

Ditto on the Tolkien-dragons-are-worms thing though. His dragons are constantly referred to as 'worms' and in my mind have always looked more similar to traditional Asian designs with long thin bodies.

Personally "Wyrm" does not evoke an Asian dragon to me. It's a very European word, and based on the fact that "serpent" (which is what "wyrm" means) and "dragon" are often interchangeable in texts like the Bible and on legends (where dragons are cast as evil), seeing "wyrm" defaults to a traditional European-style quadrupedal dragon.
