I feel the same, and it does seem hard to believe it's the same team behind them. But then, look at Star Wars, or Indiana Jones - the recent movies were under the same artistic control as the original but they seem to have missed what made the films special in the first place. Still lots of other people like The Hobbit movies so they must be striking some chord.
