Well, when Batman first appeared (1939) he was a dark vigilante who used guns and killed people. I suppose fans of that era of Batman would not be too put off by Nolanverse Batman but if they'd missed the 50s and 60s entirely they'd be wondering why Batman didn't just shoot the Joker outright.
