I do something similar with fanvids, except I try to imagine how the characters of the source material would react to the vid*. Would they understand what's going on? What would they think about what they see?

* This can get into headcanon territory as well. For example, I ship Natasha/Steve in the MCU, so how would Steve's friends and comrades (especially Peggy) react to finding out that this is the woman he ends up with?

I love that vid.

I'm pretty sure their reaction would be characterized essentially as one of YEAH SON.

Anachronistic perhaps, but I don't think substantially incorrect.

Bit late to this, but do you have any recs for Natasha/Steve?

Well, when Batman first appeared (1939) he was a dark vigilante who used guns and killed people. I suppose fans of that era of Batman would not be too put off by Nolanverse Batman but if they'd missed the 50s and 60s entirely they'd be wondering why Batman didn't just shoot the Joker outright.

Oh for Battlestar Galactica, I had this recurring fantasy of some SF fan from, idk, 1980? Coming forward in time somehow and mentioning and laughing at it and me going, "...you mean, the multiple-Hugo and Emmy-award-winning Battlestar Galactica?" and having them flip out and wondering exactly what timeline they ended up visiting.

Perhaps I need to wear the Mask of Shame for this. XD

Secret 5 - Adaptations, reboots, re-imaginings, continuations

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-08 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Pictures are the posters of the movies "The Avengers", "Sherlock Holmes" (directed by Guy Ritchie), "The Dark Knight", "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (directed by Peter Jackson" and "Star Trek" (reboot), plus the logos of the TV series "Battlestar Galactica" and "Doctor Who".]

Whenever I'm watching something that is an adaptation/continuation/reboot/re-imagining of something that's been around quite a while, I find myself trying to imagine what it would be like to be a fan from decades ago who suddenly traveled forward in time and stumbled upon this new version. If I had just turned on the TV and started watching any particular moment, how long would it take me to realize what I was seeing? Would I like it?

I've started having a hard time NOT doing this. I wish I could just enjoy things normally again.

My grandmother pretty much actually experienced this with LotR. She read the books when they came out (waiting for the next and all, which I've always been jealous of), but although she enjoyed them, didn't re-read more than once or twice (and that was in the early 60s).

She ended up enjoying the films more than the rest of us, because she'd forgotten so many details, and wasn't sitting there nitpicking. Mind you, she detested the omission of Glorfindel and Denethor's flouncy swan-dive.

Am I a horrible person for laughing my ass off at Denethor's flouncy swan dive and rewinding to rewatch that scene about twelve times?

Also, the way Gandalf calmly says "so passes Denethor..." --- right after Denethor literally passed him while running out of the place while on fire -- made it sound exactly as if Gandalf is like "heads up guys, the crazy asshole's finally set himself on fire and he's headed your way."

Well, as someone who was there for original ST and DW, and 60s Batman, I can tell you that my reaction would have been "why so serious?"

But since there was only the normal sort of time travel, and I was there for the first DK graphic novel, the ST movies and spinoffs, and the DW cancellation/hiatus, it was all pretty seamless.

+1

This is really interesting and cool, OP. "This is Star Trek? But... where's Captain Kirk?!" Why is Spock kissing Uhura?!" I'm sorry though that you can't just watch things and enjoy them without thinking about them this way. Maybe if you take a break and watch un-adapted stuff it'll go away?

This is AWESOME. Why would you be disappointed that you do that? I'm gonna try that next time I see an adaptation of an old story! It sounds really, really fun. Especially the movies with epic special effects like LotR :D

Damn, now I'm going to do this. o.O

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-01-08 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect that while 'original' Star Trek fans would go "...dafuq is this?" but then enjoy the movies anyway, middle-level/later-decade Star Trek fans (especially those in the beginning of the Voyager era) would go "...DAFUQ HAPPENED?!" and ask where their beloved Star Trek went.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
They'd probably be in such awe of the visuals and style alone that they wouldn't bother nitpicking details like most modern folk.

My grandmother passed away last month. She was a huge Green Hornet fan, and was proof that fangirlism runs in my blood- she used to write 'home stories' in her journals about Britt and Kato, living out extremely domestic lives together. I took her to see the reboot and while she loved it, she made a point to tell me how much different it was compared to the old versions, and how she preferred Gordon Jones over Van Williams, and while Bruce Lee personally her favorite Kato, Jay Chou was 'cuter'. But if there was one thing she was certain of, it was that she would always recognize The Green Hornet, no matter what version it was, so I figure if you're a huge fan, you'll be quick to catch onto familiar elements no matter what.

Augh, I miss her. I was allowed to keep all of her journals (she had TONS of them) and I've just now started reading through them- she shared a couple of her favorite stories with me years ago but I didn't pester her too much about the others. She wrote pure, utterly indulgent fluff, I swear I developed cavities. I almost want to transcribe them online so there will always be a copy of them just in case something happens to her journals. I don't think I'll ever get over the fact that my 92 year old grandmother was a slash writer, lol.

I'm so sorry for your loss but oh my god this is possibly the best comment I've ever read. Your grandmother sounds like a pretty awesome person and I'm glad you were able to bond with her like that. That's honestly just a really cool story.

If you do end up transcribing any of the journals, I'd love if you could share a link around here.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Another person that would love for you to transcribe them and put them up on AO3 or ffnet or anywhere! I'm not even a Green Hornet fan; I just love the idea of her ideas living on.

You'll have to come up with a cool username for her too :)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
transcribe them to keep them, definitely. you don't even have to share them, just make sure theyre safe.

if you think it would be in her honour and if she wouldn't mind if they were shared, you might as well make them public. fans and nonfans alike would probs be overjoyed to read them (vintage) and i'm sure that actual fans themselves would be hella excited!!!

youve got such a cool opportunity and your grandma sounds like such a neat lady! i wish you all the best.

The problem with that theory is that it is very difficult to go completely unwarned that an adaptation/continuation/reboot/re-imagining is in the works, with modern internet grapevine.

I am a fan of variable strength for Doctor Who Star Trek and LotR, and for the most part the new versions? I like.

Of course I will say that I feel I am a type of fan who takes things rather uncritically. I see other people's nitpicking, and when I consider what they say, I see why they say it... But I still like the new canon.

Fans feel Star Trek reboot has fallen flat for various reasons. I... see why they say it, but I did not mind the movies.

People don't like RTD for various reasons. I see what they mean but I didn't mind his work. They dislike Moffatt. I see what they mean... but I still liked it.

People nitpick the hell out of LotR (and even more out of The Hobbit). I see what they're talking about... but I think the movies are awesome and think the things they hold onto so damn hard would have not worked onscreen.

So... I', a fan of the old canon of those three who sits and watches the new stuff and likes it, despite it's problems.

I actually stumbled into New Who more or less unwarned. I had been a fan as a kid (pre-hiatus, although I watched whatever PBS showed, which wasn't necessarily the most recent episodes at the time). I had heard there was going to be a new series, but I wasn't in the fandom and hadn't been paying attention to any of the news at all. Then one day I was at a con and walked into a room where someone was showing The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and BOOM.
