training an old cat

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
My parents just replaced our ancient living room window so we can open and close it easier (eliminating me as The Only Person Who Can Find the Window's Sweet Spot to get it open), and since the cat used the old one to get in and out, they even had a little cat flap installed in it.

Thing is, our cat's 10-12 years old. He's spry for his age but has never been very smart. We've pushed him through the flap a few times but we can't get him to do it himself. Any tips? We don't want him sitting outside and yowling to get in in the middle of a cold night

Smear something tasty (for him) on both sides of the door. When he's finished licking one side he'll be familiar with the door and hopefully he'll smell the goodies on the other side and go on to investigate. Also try calling for him from the other side while he tries, with a promise of more treats. Best of luck to you both!

Put the cat on one side of the flap, and some strong smelling food on the other side, and wait until he gets the idea. But he'll probably sit outside and yowl until you let him in, for a while at least.

The above commenters have some good tips, but the real thing that you're going to need here is to just keep on truckin'. Old cats get pretty set in their habits, it's true, but with enough repetition they eventually get the idea.

It might be a two person job at first- someone to hold the flap open just a tiny bit and another person to wait on the other side with a favorite treat. It might take a bunch of pushes just to make him get the idea that going through it isn't going to kill him. Just keep at it, he'll get habituated to the idea soon enough.

Help him go through and give him a treat? And repeat until he gets it. Apparently you can condition animals with treats or something.
