Honestly, I thought that the point of that was he was criticizing both the fact that the movie director made them "so gay" without actually making them gay, and the fact that society dismisses close male friendships as "being so gay" without their any actual gay content.

Like, he was criticizing the movie for showing a romance without actually having it be a romance

I'd have to rewatch it, though, to see if I'm misremembering or not.

But that's the only thing to do that's faithful to the original work. For Pete's sake, I know Jackson took some liberties, but it would have been a hell of a thing to have actually made it a serious romance.

...but it isn't a romance in the books? At all? This was before the director went "fuck canon, Evangeline Lilly."

I mean if you'd prefer we go the route "all very close same sex friendships are gay, no exceptions, people cannot be emotionally intimate without wanting to fuck" you're pretty shitty.

I didn't see anything romantic between Sam and Frodo and I was in my slash-goggle phase. There's a hell of a lot more Aragorn/Baromir potential.

Nice job calling the anon shitty when they're talking about the actions of the NC, not their own personal beliefs.

I said "if."

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship it but Frodo and Sam's relationship (in the books at least) is... complex. So it wouldn't be completely surprising for people to see something in it, even if it's not romantic.

That said the Nostalgia Critic position is frankly garbage.

The way I see if, Frodo and Sam are friends, and Frodo has no interest for anything more, but Sam is hella gay for Frodo. Don't know if he's gay or if it's just Frodo, but for his star-studded eyes, there's no difference at that point in time.

The thing with Sam and Frodo's relationship is that it took Ian MacKellan pointing out where, in the book, Sam and Frodo touched each other in ways that were written as best buddies friendship of Tolkien's era but in our times is considered a no-go because it seen as being "gay".

I blame modern straight males' fear of being mistaken as gay that makes people read the way Frodo and Sam behave as being gay.

Pff, Aragorn/Boromir had nothing on Legolas/Gimli.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
In the books, definitely; less so in the movies.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know.

I don't prefer that, though I would prefer more actual gay relationships.

I don't either, but I can see where other people might.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I saw potential in Merry and Pippin, but this was before I knew they were cousins. The closest Frodo & Sam came was near the end, when Frodo basically said he would be glad to die with Sam, but even that didn't go past friendship imo.

You are. I watched it for the first time a week ago (random google search brought it up). He rants against the movie making them gay and says it takes away from the friendship and repeats the tired line about why can't some relationships just be friendships.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with him to an extent, but only in correlation with the fact that there does need to be more actual homosexual relationships in media.

Yeahhh but he also said that close male/male friendships are 'rare' in fiction. :/

I think he meant male/male friendships with open displays of affection, but still. Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think he meant it in terms of main stream media.

Agreed - and didn't he say that he would have preferred it if it had actually had gay characters? It's been a while since I watched that review, but I seem to remember him saying he thought it would be cool to see a fantasy movie with gay heroes or something like that.
