...but it isn't a romance in the books? At all? This was before the director went "fuck canon, Evangeline Lilly."

I mean if you'd prefer we go the route "all very close same sex friendships are gay, no exceptions, people cannot be emotionally intimate without wanting to fuck" you're pretty shitty.

I didn't see anything romantic between Sam and Frodo and I was in my slash-goggle phase. There's a hell of a lot more Aragorn/Baromir potential.

Nice job calling the anon shitty when they're talking about the actions of the NC, not their own personal beliefs.

I said "if."

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship it but Frodo and Sam's relationship (in the books at least) is... complex. So it wouldn't be completely surprising for people to see something in it, even if it's not romantic.

That said the Nostalgia Critic position is frankly garbage.

The way I see if, Frodo and Sam are friends, and Frodo has no interest for anything more, but Sam is hella gay for Frodo. Don't know if he's gay or if it's just Frodo, but for his star-studded eyes, there's no difference at that point in time.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
didn't he marry a girl hobbit and impregnate her like 500 times? I think it's more that he's straight but Frodo is his exception. or maybe his heart belongs to two people, and they are Frodo and girl hobbit.

The thing with Sam and Frodo's relationship is that it took Ian MacKellan pointing out where, in the book, Sam and Frodo touched each other in ways that were written as best buddies friendship of Tolkien's era but in our times is considered a no-go because it seen as being "gay".

I blame modern straight males' fear of being mistaken as gay that makes people read the way Frodo and Sam behave as being gay.

You are still shittier for saying "You wish you were raped" to an anon.

Hi that particular anon. You're still shitty for reasons unrelated to this thread.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I am not that anon. You just disgusted me.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Of course only that particular anon could possibly feel disgusted by that comment of yours. As we all know, it's generally socially acceptable to claim a random stranger would 'wish they were raped just to score points' based on a few lines of text, so every negative about that incident comment must simply be that thinskinned, whiny anon sameanoning.

Please, you don't even believe that yourself.

Pff, Aragorn/Boromir had nothing on Legolas/Gimli.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
In the books, definitely; less so in the movies.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh come on, no need to fight about which ship is better.

Aragorn/Boromir was my first ship ever in LotR. I still can't get into Legolas/Gimli enough to bother and seeing it come up in Hobbit fics bores me endlessly.

Guess what? I still ship Boromir! Only not with Aragorn anymore.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know.

I don't prefer that, though I would prefer more actual gay relationships.

I don't either, but I can see where other people might.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I saw potential in Merry and Pippin, but this was before I knew they were cousins. The closest Frodo & Sam came was near the end, when Frodo basically said he would be glad to die with Sam, but even that didn't go past friendship imo.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
They're cousins on both sides, though, implying that cousin marriage was probably pretty common, which makes sense given the time period it was written in, and the fact that Pippin is basically the king of the hobbits.

I keep trying to tell people this but no one seems to absorb it, the Thain of the Shire is more like a Steward instead of a king.

Hobbits nominally accepted the rule of the kings of Arnor and the office of the Thain was to act as a representative of the king, in the absence of the king himself. It's also a hereditary position, just like the Steward of Gondor is.
