It hit me hard, too.

I think it's because it was so realistic, so much more like death in real life -- no heroic sacrifice, no opportunity to interpret it as meaningful in any way; just a little life getting randomly snuffed out.

God, yes, this. It was just so POINTLESS a death. I bawled like a baby.

AYRT

I have to admit I actually teared up just writing this, silly as it may seem.

This is why I actually preferred Hedwig's movie death: at least she goes out taking a shot for Harry and not just dangling there in a cage.

(Assuming I'm remembering correctly).

But I remember she was taking a shot for Harry in the books? (on the other hand, I don't actually remember what they did in the movie)

That's what I thought too.

She was in her goddamned cage in the book. Completely fucking awful. :(

No, she was in her cage the whole time. Harry discovers it when they get back to the Burrow (IIRC). Just awful. In the movie she flies into the face of one of the Death Eaters shooting at Harry.

Shit, I'm tearing up now.

tbh her death in the books reminded me a lot of what Kitase said about Aerith's death and what he'd intended while writing it.

“In the real world things are very different. You just need to look around you. Nobody wants to die that way. People die of disease and accident. Death comes suddenly and there is no notion of good or bad. It leaves, not a dramatic feeling but great emptiness. When you lose someone you loved very much you feel this big empty space and think, ‘If I had known this was coming I would have done things differently.’ These are the feelings I wanted to arouse in the players with Aerith’s death relatively early in the game. Feelings of reality and not Hollywood.

I personally really enjoyed that Rowling had her die without fanfare or a big heroic sacrifice. For me it felt more meaningful than many of the other deaths, because I felt like it was Rowling showing that deaths can still matter even if they aren't heroic.
