Is it 2007 again so soon?

But that was a true heartbreaker, OP. Sometimes it's just plain harder to see animals die than humans (or humanoids). Don't quite know why...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's because Hedwig didn't even know she was fighting something. She was like Cedric, a spare. And if you look at it a certain way, she was also technically the first thing that showed love towards Harry since his parents died.

For me it was Dobby. Aside from Sirius Dobby's death was the only one were I actually cried when I read it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Dobby's was sad, if not as surprising as Sirius's. When Harry told Dobby to never try to save his life again in CoS, I was like "Yeah, Dobby's going to die saving Harry's life again." Of course Sirius's shouldn't have been so surprising... if I'd been more familiar with the fantasy/sci fi genre, I probably wouldn't have been remotely surprised.

Me, too, really. Mostly because the three that could have outdid it, I was spoiled on which dulled their effect, but still...

Same. I have trouble with defenseless deaths in media :/

:(

I remember rereading that part because I couldn't believe it. WHY JKR WHY!?!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
It hit me hard, too.

I think it's because it was so realistic, so much more like death in real life -- no heroic sacrifice, no opportunity to interpret it as meaningful in any way; just a little life getting randomly snuffed out.

Secret 7 - Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (book)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-08 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a white owl with a little black in its feathers.]

Of all the deaths in Book Seven, Hedwig's hit me the hardest.

Where the "of all the deaths X bothered me the most" meme from again?

I remember this being all the rage a couple years back.

That is a damn gorgeous owl. And this secret is making me sad even though I never finished Harry Potter and hence never experienced her death.

HEDWIG DIED? FUCK

It made me sad too, OP. I'm really glad that Hagrid was there to comfort Harry, because of all people he would understand the death of a pet.

Hedwig's death was sad. As an owl, I mourned for her.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Me, too, OP, and I hate how it was written and how little Harry reacts. But then, I always felt Harry didn't appreciate Hedwig and was over the course of the books too often dismissive of or mean to her, especially considering all she did for him and the devotion she showed.

Snape, Dobby, Hedwig. In that order.

I don't think there's anything wrong with this. I mean, the other characters who died were killed while fighting consciously for something and knowing they were taking a risk and might die. Poor Hedwig was an animal stuck in a cage and didn't know what was going on. :( Sometimes animal deaths hit harder than adult human deaths for that not-understanding-what's-happening factor, rather like child deaths.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I cried like a fool when she died, and then somehow convinced myself that she'd only been injured, and she'd show up at the end of the book, having been searching for Harry all year while they were magically hidden. Then I finished the book, was very very disappointed, and cried like a fool again.

[personal profile] pelespen 2014-01-08 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. That was the absolute worst. I think partly because Hedwig was totally innocent, a beloved pet and friend, etc., but also because I was bracing for character deaths and completely did not see that one coming. Seriously, 3am the night of the book release, I'm sitting on the couch ugly-sobbing while trying not to wake my husband with my breakdown. Fucking Rowling, man.

I kinda thought this was a huge point of the entire 7th book?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-01-08 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
That it's not the heroic "big" deaths that hit people hardest, but the smaller, sideline, or more "innocent" deaths that are most devastating. I know a lot of people found Fred Weasley's death a lot sadder than Dumbledore's, and I distinctly remember the movie theater being full of sobbing during Dobby's death in a day I don't recall many other places in the movies, or any movies really...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Same. It was so unexpected. I got really sad the other day just thinking about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God. I sobbed at Hedwig's death. Fred (which broke my heart), at least he died like a warrior. But animals being killed...I just cannot take it. They're so, so innocent.

The movie redeemed it very slightly because she went out like a badass.
