Me, too, OP, and I hate how it was written and how little Harry reacts. But then, I always felt Harry didn't appreciate Hedwig and was over the course of the books too often dismissive of or mean to her, especially considering all she did for him and the devotion she showed.

I sort of agree with this. I get Harry had a lot of stuff going on and maybe didn't have time to really be depressed about it, but if someone killed my pet I'd be inconsolable for a good while.

I mostly hated the contrast between his craawling in my skin - grave digging in the rain for that annoying house elf and not another thought wasted on his loyal owl.
