I still would have liked a female dwarf better than a female elf - considering the number of dwarves in the party who have almost no defined characters or speaking roles in the book, you could have genderbent some of them, no? And I say that as someone who usually hates genderbending.

See, I think I wouldn't have minded her that much, if the Sue-ness on her hadn't been cranked up to the max. I even might have liked the badass elf OC. I could tolerate the romance, even though it took up a lot of time in the movie that really could have been spent on other things (I just wanted to at least have a little glimpse at the grand old party taking place while Tauriel and Kili were flirting. That we saw absolutely nothing of that was a big, big letdown).
But why was the damn Legolas romance necessary? That was the point where, for me, Tauriel went from "that kind of cool female elf OC" to "that Mary-Sue elf". And that's a pity because, from what I understood, that stuff was only added later and the actress wasn't all that happy about it?

But yeah, okay idea with the character, but badly written and for an OC, she is a little too important, imo. Especially since - and I really hope I'm wrong here, but the hints were there - it even looked like she will be voice of reason that gets Thranduil to throw his ball in the game in the last movie? As I said, I really hope I'm wrong, because that would be really too much, but when it comes to the writing, I don't have much hope.
