I now want to see this. <3 Thanks OP!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I did appreciate that Tauriel spent the entire movie saving the asses of her boyfriends.

I went in expecting to seriously dislike the romance aspect, but it ended up working for me. I think because it seemed to be mostly one-sided (Kili to Tauriel) and I can't blame him for being starstruck/awed. I mean, she was pretty fucking awesome to him. I'd probably fall in love with someone who kept badassedly shooting arrows into everything that was trying to hurt me and then healed me whilst glowing magnificently.

Unf. Yes. Role reversals are awesome.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I hate them both. Their relationship cheapened Legolas and Gimli's and was tumblr fan service of the worst kind. I can't wait until Kili dies and I hope she does too.

...huh, hadn't thought of it that way before. I don't ship them, just...hadn't put on my thinking cap about that relationship, I guess!

I ended up liking them a lot more than I thought I was going to! And that was part of the reason why, yes.

Also, I adore red hair/red heads, so that didn't hurt much.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that was cool! I went in expecting to cringe a lot and dislike it and... OK, fine, I did cringe a bit at times, but I also enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, and I awww-ed and started rooting for them, the silly people. And I agree that the role reversal was very cool. (Also, if you like that sort of thing and Tolkien, might I interest you in the story of Beren and Lúthien from the Silmarillion? I think it might have a certain appeal...)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I like you, OP. This may explain why I like them too.

I remember posting a comment (anon) really, really similar in wording to this a while back, so uh, did you borrow from that comment for this secret? Doesn't particularly bother me but I think it's amusing.

[personal profile] greenvelvetcake 2014-01-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I hated them together in the movies because the awful Kili-gets-shot-and-Tauriel-has-to-go-all-glowy thing dragged on far too long and took away from the major plot... but the relationship the fandom has concocted is 1000% better than anything we got in the movie.

Secret 4 - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (film), shipping, Tauriel and Kíli (characters)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a fanart of Tauriel and Kíli from the film "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug". Tauriel is an elf with light skin and long red hair wearing green and brown clothes (tunic, vest, cape, trousers/pants, arm guards, boots), while Kíli is a dwarf with light olive skin and longish brown hair wearing brown clothes (tunix, vest, cape, trousers/pants, arm guards, boots, if warmer looking). They are contentedly hugging each other. Kíli is shorter than Tauriel, so he is resting on her lap.]

After watching the movie, I kept wondering why I fell so hard for this ship (I was prepared to hate it). I finally figured it out:

It's the role reversal. The typical gender roles are totally switched around- It's Tauriel, the girl, who protects Kili and saves his life (multiple times even!) instead of the guy doing all the protecting and saving, as it is usually in movies. Meanwhile, Kili plays the usually female role of having a crush on the hero and swooning after her. Unf.

I don't ship it but Kili's starry eyed wonder over Tauriel was pretty damn adorable. Also most of the fanart I've seen for Kili/Tauriel is super cute.

Same! <3

They were really adorable.

Plus I love how it's a dwarf/elf pairing and also shorter male with taller female, which we hardly ever see.

I was also weary about this couple, but after seeing the movie it really won me over.

The dynamics of their relationship are right up my alley, and the art being made by the fandom is FANTASTIC so I definitely see why you're interested.

(Plus, they both have beautiful, luscious hair. Such a pretty couple. :p)

Continuing to cry that I haven't seen the movie yet.

The art for them is SO DAMN CUTE. I ship them on a purely aesthetic level, but it's good to hear that they're awesome in the movie together as well.

Yay role reversals!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's probably it, yeah. Wow, I totally did not expect to ship this at all, and come to think of it they didn't really portray it that well (that healing scene, seriously?). But I totally fell like a sack of bricks for this pairing, cheese and all, so add this to all my existing sentiments, this is a solid guarantee that There and Back Again will rip me in two :|

Why is this a secret?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-01-08 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, from my understanding, that's why a lot of people love this pairing. As far as I've heard, most people are just pissed off at the love triangle, at the non-canon character, the fact this relationships somehow cheapens the Gimli/Legolas relationship, or just that it dragged on and took too much unnecessary screentime (a complaint about like half the movie). Otherwise, the romance itself seems pretty good and popular.

But then I'm not actually in the fandom, so I'm probably missing something.

Yeeeaaah-up.

I mean, I finally just saw it, and the Tauriel/Kili stuff I saw online is why I finally decided to get myself to the theatre. The Hobbit is one of my favorite and most beloved childhood books, but the last movie just didn't do much for me. For that matter, even this one was mostly like, "Well, this is a fun movie. It bears no resemblance to the things I loved about The Hobbit (that is, the quiet, cozy, homey aspect of it, even while away on adventures), but it's enjoyable. And there's much less rabbit-sled."

But guy-who-is-shorter-than-the-girl is kind of one of my favorite things, in relationship tropes.

And turns out, guy-being-the-very-pretty-damsel is another. I really thought, initially, that I'd be annoyed by Tauriel, especially the idea of her having a relationship with Legolas, but no, she comes off as an interesting character with agency. I mean, for what it is.

I still would have liked a female dwarf better than a female elf - considering the number of dwarves in the party who have almost no defined characters or speaking roles in the book, you could have genderbent some of them, no? And I say that as someone who usually hates genderbending.

See, I think I wouldn't have minded her that much, if the Sue-ness on her hadn't been cranked up to the max. I even might have liked the badass elf OC. I could tolerate the romance, even though it took up a lot of time in the movie that really could have been spent on other things (I just wanted to at least have a little glimpse at the grand old party taking place while Tauriel and Kili were flirting. That we saw absolutely nothing of that was a big, big letdown).
But why was the damn Legolas romance necessary? That was the point where, for me, Tauriel went from "that kind of cool female elf OC" to "that Mary-Sue elf". And that's a pity because, from what I understood, that stuff was only added later and the actress wasn't all that happy about it?

But yeah, okay idea with the character, but badly written and for an OC, she is a little too important, imo. Especially since - and I really hope I'm wrong here, but the hints were there - it even looked like she will be voice of reason that gets Thranduil to throw his ball in the game in the last movie? As I said, I really hope I'm wrong, because that would be really too much, but when it comes to the writing, I don't have much hope.

Honestly, I did not see the crush on Kíli's part. Most of what he said to Tauriel through the movie sounded more like he was teasing or deliberately winding her up. When he admits the stone is from his mother, it starts to sound like he's opening up a bit, and they find a small thing where maybe, just maybe they could eventually be friends (if he wasn't stuck in a prison cell and she wasn't one of his guards).

The only thing that read as outright romantic on Kíli's part is his "Do you think she could have loved me?" line, which comes while he's still recovering from delirium, and just after seeing something that he does not even connect with Tauriel when he wakes to find her near-by.

But then I already have an OTP for Kíli as well as an RP pairing for him as well, and looking for excuses to ignore Kíli/Tauriel. I found my excuses and am happy to leave the pairing to other people and merrily RP Kíli with either Boromir or a Silmaril (I play Boromir and the Silmaril).

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I might have to watch this movie after all!
