Ugh, I've been so annoyed at people like you. I grew up in the north, so yeah it's not that strange for it to get to really low temperatures like that. But you know what? In Georgia that is not normal. They are not used to it, they have not adapted for it, it is a pain and a serious problem. In some places housing is not fit for these low temps. People don't have proper clothing or prep for these temps, office buildings are not used to these temps and are having their heating actually shut down because it's too cold.

So yeah, good for you for growing up and living in a cold climate, but maybe use your brain a bit and understand why some Americans are freaking out.

Exactly. Maybe when they have a heatwave of something pathetic like high 20s 'C and they realise how hard it is to adapt to weather extremes they'll understand a smidgeon of what people in parts of America are experiencing now. Just a smidgeon though - I certainly wouldn't wish weather changes extreme enough to cause death on any one.

Seriously. Canadian here. Cold temperatures I can handle, but anything above 30 C and I start to melt.

And buildings are not insulated properly sometimes and there's no team of snow plows and people don't know how to drive in snow because it snowed once when they were three and they've never done it before. Snow usually brings the south to its knees because we don't have the infrastructure to deal with that weather because it happens so infrequently. Thank goodness it has been dry; no snow in GA.

And if you live somewhere with a huge homeless population, like where I am, every winter already poses a risk, let alone a record one. So no, this isn't about Americans not being able to pop down to the corner for their daily Starbucks or something.

I live in Los Angeles, and we would be royally fucked if our temperatures even hit freezing, let alone the subzero temperatures the rest of the country is facing. We are excellently prepared for wildfires, tsunamis, and earthquakes, things I'm told are extremely terrifying prospects for most people in the country and that we tend to be disparagingly casual about. Low temperatures? Not so much. A 4 or 5 earthquake in my area would make me roll my eyes and go back to sleep, but I would be damn concerned to hear about it in most other places, and I would legitimately freak out if I heard about something like that in a place like Manhattan, which doesn't have the most reliable foundations and has a shit ton of tall buildings crowded into a tiny area.

People don't freak out about the weather, they freak out about the fact their homes and communities are not equipped to deal with this kind of stuff and there are some serious, legitimate concerns for that. It's nearly impossible to be able to build a home that's perfectly prepared for every weather situation, and most people prepare for whatever is most likely to occur in that region. They have a right to be concerned when a freak weather case they are completely unprepared for, or even prepared for the opposite of, happens with little to no warning.
