Hi, I'm also a small town lesbian. I made a friend on OkCupid once who is kind of just my acquaintance now, but at the moment my profile is deactivated and I'm not really looking. From what I can tell the lesbians and bi women in my area never message each other (and I mean, a lot of women say in their profiles "why doesn't anyone message meeeee?" which is usually why I don't message them). Even though the questions aren't totally accurate I've found that bothering with anyone less than a 90% match is a waste of time; they usually have morals that clash with mine and that's a big deal to me. Out of the ones that are 90% and above, I would say I'm intimidated by women who are my age but highly professional, educated and experienced. But I message them if they seem nice.
