I think how much of that you see depends on what corner of tumblr you occupy. I'm strictly on the fandom side of things, following users who don't get reblogged a million times and are always at the center of some sort of new controversy in internet land. It was the same thing with LJ, unless you were on big wank comms like ONTD or something, you were unlikely to see that level of crazy away from such singularities.
