(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 12:51 am (UTC)(link)The obvious thing she's got is a lot of resentment at her father for leaving, but the thing that really strikes me is that she's got a TERRIBLE temper. (Which her son Tenzin also got, it seems.) When she gets angry, she gets INCREDIBLY angry, to the point that it's dangerous. Remember that the whole show starts with her getting so pissed off at Sokka that she cracks open Aang's iceberg by accident. We see her dealing with this constantly-simmering fury throughout the show, occasionally harnessing it for useful purposes, sometimes just blowing up at people she loves. Underneath her sweetness and responsibility, the rage is always there and you never know when it'll come out. "The Southern Raiders" is entirely about her finally finding a place beyond the anger.
As someone who's had to deal with anger issues myself, I thought that was interesting.

I think Katara is a super interesting character, too; maybe not the one I find inherently the most intriguing, but I think there's a lot more to her than "team mom" or whatever. She's great.
I've always been a Sokka man, myself, but then... of course I would be.
