So why can't you just say "Katara is the most interesting character I've ever seen"?

Yeah...doesn't make her any less interesting.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
but... but... if i don't talk in absolute absolute how will people understand me?!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Actually in agreement with this.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Eh... I think she's alright but not too far from the usual "mom" girl who mainly exists to be the rational buzzkill of the team. Not the most interesting character in ATLA, imho

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're underrating her, honestly. Yeah, she tries really hard to be responsible and levelheaded, and that does totally make her the mom of the group, but she's also got a lot going on that she's repressing and covering up.

The obvious thing she's got is a lot of resentment at her father for leaving, but the thing that really strikes me is that she's got a TERRIBLE temper. (Which her son Tenzin also got, it seems.) When she gets angry, she gets INCREDIBLY angry, to the point that it's dangerous. Remember that the whole show starts with her getting so pissed off at Sokka that she cracks open Aang's iceberg by accident. We see her dealing with this constantly-simmering fury throughout the show, occasionally harnessing it for useful purposes, sometimes just blowing up at people she loves. Underneath her sweetness and responsibility, the rage is always there and you never know when it'll come out. "The Southern Raiders" is entirely about her finally finding a place beyond the anger.

As someone who's had to deal with anger issues myself, I thought that was interesting.

Not sure about her being the most interesting character ever written, but I do like her a lot. I like that while she very initially appears as if she might be the stereotypical female character of the group who is regulated to being the kindhearted and nurturing one, she is also quickly shown to possess a hot temper and a lot of anger and prejudice rooted in the fact that her mother was murdered. I think favorite katara centric episode is the one where she tracks down her mothers killer and while I don't think anyone actually expected her to kill the guy like zuko encouraged, she also didn't offer him forgiveness like aang urged. Often in a situation like that, the writers would choose to have the hero nobly offering their forgiveness even to someone who had wronged them horribly, so I liked that they showed katara dealing with it her own way.

I actually was fairly annoyed at that one. It was mostly at Katara telling Sokka that he didn't love their mother as much as she did because he didn't want to get needless revenge and telling Aang, the boy whose whole culture, friends, and family were wiped out, that he didn't understand what it's like to lose someone he loved. I get that she was angry, but I don't think she ever apologized to them or realized how shitty it was to say something like that.

I'm not sure she is THE most interesting, but surely very much up there in my "list of complex characters I love".

I love Katara too. I'm not sure if she's the worlds most interesting character -- as there are a bajillion characters out in tv/movie/book land -- but she's one of my favs anyhow.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
She's cool, but I enjoy Korra more.

I like Katara, but Toph is best (with Mai right behind her).

Yeah, I love all of A:tla's characters female or otherwise, but Toph will always be my favorite.

ATLA SECRET!!!!!

I think Katara is a super interesting character, too; maybe not the one I find inherently the most intriguing, but I think there's a lot more to her than "team mom" or whatever. She's great.

I've always been a Sokka man, myself, but then... of course I would be.

Katara is a really great character. She has a lot of depth and grows over the seasons. I don't think I fully appreciated her the first time watching ATLA but now she's definitely up there in my favorite characters of all time list.

I found out my 4-year old cousin (who has two big sisters) had been watching the show, so I asked him who was his favorite character, expecting Sokka or Zuko. He said Katara, and I was so unbelievably proud.
