Hey

did you know

you can be pro-religion and still hate it when people try to convert other people

There you go, saying reasonable things again.

I'm sorry. It's a habit.

I forgive you. But just this once.

Stop being reasonable. You're getting in the way of IceyRed being so very put upon for being conservative.

You can also be pro-religion, anti-converting others, and confused by OP's weird belief that someone talking about their life was in any way trying to convert OP. Or maybe OP thought that she was "protecting" those poor Africans, who could very easily decline the trail-friend's attention?

I dunno. OP's response didn't make sense to me. And most of this thread is just gross, on both sides of the aisle.

Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
OP didn't think their fellow dog-walker was trying to convert them. OP found their fellow dog-walker's participation in a Mission trip that involved going to South Africa to build churches and hand out Bibles uncomfortable and ethically-suspect, with the whole colonialist proselytization angle and all. That's what I got out of it, at any rate. Does that clarify things?

Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
No. Because now I'm left with the impression that OP and most of this thread thinks that only people in first world countries have the ability (or perhaps deserve the right) to coolly evaluate their options and choose for themselves.

At the end of the day, no one was trying to convert OP and whatever conversations happened between trail-lady and the citizens of whatever African nation she visited had nothing to do with OP either. So I'm left with the enduring question of "And how does this prove the woman is a scumbag and thus unworthy of OP's friendship?"

And most of this thread still comes off as ickily paternalistic.

Shush! Your logic is drowning out Iceyred's poignant "Song of the Oppressed White Christians"!

I'm not oppressed. OP is just a prejudiced asshole. And so are you.

Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
I for one am glad they have that prejudice as long as it makes people like you get their panties in a bunch.

Your compassion and understanding are definitely bringing converts to Jesus. Keep up the good works!

Hey

Did you know

OP is not pro-religion. They say they are pro-religion and then act like a shit towards a religious person.

Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Deciding not to be friends with someone is not acting like shit towards anyone.

Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
To ''loving Christians'', it apparently is...

Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
OP said they respect religion in others, depending on how the religious person in question behaves, and then chose not to pursue a close friendship with a religious person. "Choosing not to pursue a close friendship with someone" =/= "Acting like a shit toward them."

You are really coming off as though you have some sort of persecution complex. It would be a good idea for you to step back and take another look at the situation here.

Except AYRT hasn't changed their behaviour at all, AYRT has dialled back their own personal feelings and expectations. AYRT has settled for being friendly acquaintances but has decided against friendship - all without changing their behaviour to dog-walker. They haven't acted in a shitty manner to dog-walker.

Honestly you really sound like you're projecting a huge amount on this thread. AYRT hasn't hurt anyone, they just don't want to be friends with someone who has actions they seriously disagree with. Which is fine and acceptable.

But the outraged tantrum you're throwing really isn't. You're yelling at AYRT over something they haven't done from - is it from your personal experiences or expectation?

Either way I'd suggest taking a breather or something. Normally I like to think that I'm pretty laidback but seeing you being a bit of an ass all over this thread is reminded me why I tend to dial back my friendships, like AYRT, when I find out someone is a serious religious person.

Your mean you can be religious and still take a step back to examine the politics of religious practices?? Without feeling put upon or calling prejudice like that prejudice could ever hurt you???
