"My religion told me to" is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. If it's sucky to do it for shits and giggles, it's sucky to do it for religion.

Passing out a few Bibles, building a church (that the locals must've have allowed them to build in the first place) and talking about God, is not really sucky behavior.

Christians do a lot of sucky shit. This isn't an example of it.

When the community does need bibles or churches but homes, schools, and clean water it kinda is sucky behavior.

Where did the OP ever say the village her missionary ex-friend went to was lacking in homes, schools, and clean water? Africa isn't a singular mass of poverty and disease. You sound like the one with the white savior complex here.

There're a lot of assumptions in that sentence.

First off, who are you/we to say what they need? If the people in a specific area want to let people come and build them a church, then what's it to you or anyone else here?

Secondly, churches often run programs the community needs - such as AIDs treatment for those abandoned by their families. (And yeah, that does actually happen.)

fwiw I think you're the only sane person in this thread and I have no idea why you're getting jumped on for this. i'm glad someone else was as horrified by the op as me

Thank you.

A good portion of the people doing the jumping are of the 'OMG CHRISTIANITY IS THE SUCK AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING BAD IN THE WORLD. IM SO EDGY LOOK AT ME TELLING YOU HOW MUCH RELIGION SUCKS' variety. Haters gonna hate.

I don't really get that vibe from many posters in this thread at all. All I'm getting is that some of them find some missionary work to be a bit questionable/skeevy but ymmv.

...I'll be on the veranda since you're already on the cross.

Wow. Reel back in the projection there; IMAX is going to sue you for trademark infringement.

"that the locals must've have allowed them to build"

You actually cannot know this, and a lot of the time religious missionary work is actually part of a bigger business that's more harmful to small developing communities than helpful.

It's most likely colonialist bullshit.

Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Considering that there has to be a preexisting religious community to make the church-building worthwhile, locals have to drum up local and foreign support for workers and funding, locals have to buy and set aside land for the building, locals have to get the necessary government permits (or hire attorneys to do it), and, oh yes, I saw a group of locals with machetes and spears driving the local Muslims out of their community on the news earlier this evening, I'm going to say that you're full of strange prejudices and nonsense.

(And have a strange obsession with colonialism.)

you say "A strange obsession with colonialism", like it wasn't a huge part of the reason indigenous communities or whole social structures have been destroyed or damaged throughout history.

That must be why so many black South Africans are christian.

We must save them from their own religion.

AYART

You don't seem to understand the economic, social, or political factors that drove colonialism. The religious institutions came much, much later AFTER the initial colonizing had been done.

Whatever your hate is for Christianity and agency, it's warping your perceptions.

DA

Wtf are you on about? Religion played a MAJOR part in the Europea colonialism of the 16th century onwards, and they actually used it as justification for the whole thing. Look up those Papal Bulls. Seriously, what, historical facts =/= religious prejudice.

Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
...The Papal Bull related to who could colonize what were related to the New World and are the reason that Brazil is one huge, Portuguese speaking country and the rest of South America speaks Spanish. (And they were STILL in it for the money. Again, religious conversion didn't happen during the first, second, or even third waves.)

South America is not Africa.

And I'm adding a geography book to your assigned texts.
