I think Buffy had some serious PTSD going on in season six. Even in season five, she was emotionally about to snap. Remember the catatonic state she went into after Glory took Dawn? And after being pulled out of that, she dies, gets resurrected in a horrific way, has to deal with readjusting, dealing with her mother's death all over again (with everything that was going on with Glory and Dawn, she probably never really had much of a chance to process that and grieve her), and now is expected to hold down a day job and pay the bills+ be full time slayer + be parent to Dawn. Not to mention the related stress of Willow's magic addition and her split with Tara. That would be a challenge for anyone, much less a 21 year old who'd been through the trauma that she had in the last five-six years. So yes, I think what Giles did was terrible. There were better ways than just leaving her to drown by herself. (Although I never knew until this secret that ASH wanted out - I just figured it was another way of making Buffy's life suck as much as possible.)

So much this! Plus the house was, apparently, not in good shape (full copper repipe!), and Buffy was being threatened with CPS taking Dawn away, and her 'roommates' had moved in and taken over her *mother's* room, and did jack to help pay the bills....

I didn't know that about ASH, either, but they could have handled that *so* much better.

Something that just occurred to me - did anyone ever mention Buffy going back to college in S6? Or was it just pretty much expected for her to get a job and take care of Dawn? It's been a while, and I can't remember for sure. It seems like I remember it being mentioned, but they didn't have the money, or something.

I think she started to/talked about it, but then money and the house and whatnot became too much of an issue and she couldn't deal. I think...she talked to the school and was like 'if i do this, pay this, blah blah, i can go back' and it was a fairly impossible set of hoops to jump at that time.

So add another layer of 'you're a failure at school' guilt and worry to the whole mess.

Yeah that makes sense.
