Correction: Her own fucking house that some of them had been living in apparently rent free while Buffy had to take on a shitty fast food job.

Which circles back to the original secret, which I also totally agree with. She was recently orphaned, recently brought back from the dead, suddenly had a little sister to look after, didn't have the experience or, because of her slayerness and everything else, schedule to hold down anything other than a crappy low paying job -- and this is the time to abandon her? Really?

On the otherhand, she had her friends in-house, a close relationship with her sister-daughter, and had even managed to get an entry-level job in one of the few sectors where a college dropout had a legitimate chance of career progression. You can see how he might think that she had finally gotten her shit together and was not only moving on with her life but had an live-in support group. What better time to start withdrawing and letting her stand on her own.
