So wait, it sucks because Mimi lives? Or because you think Larson ripped off Puccini? Either way, wtf?

I mean, I haven't even spent more than two minutes in the online fandom and I can tell you that plenty of people know that it's based off of La Boheme. In fact, most of the time, whenever there's wank in the fandom, it's because people are assuming that no one knows that it was based off of La Boheme and then everyone points out that . . . actually, yeah we do. It's not like Larson made it a secret that it was based off of it. There's actually an entire song pretty much referencing it, perhaps you heard it, it's called La Vie Boheme.

I mean, you're allowed to not like what you don't like, but don't just assume that everyone else in the fandom is a blithering uncultured moron just because you don't think they have an appropriate appreciation of the source material.

Y'know, for once, I'd like to see a fan of the book show up somewhere and wank about how the opera sucks 'cause it was just a ripoff of the book and Puccini is nowhere near as godlike as the author. Just as a change of pace.

Also, there is no way in hell that RENT is the worst musical ever. Funny Girl and The Dead are the worst musicals ever. And the worst musical-made-movie was Phantom.

And the worst musical-made-movie was Phantom.

D: WORD.

*CLING* I was beginning to think I was the only person on the internet that didn't like it. D:

I don't, but then, I'm a book fan.

Re: #8

[identity profile] linen-tartaruga.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, I was raised on the Phantom soundtrack and have been a fan of it since long before I ever actually saw it, but I only just got around to reading the book last year. I do, however, absolutely love it.

Re: #8

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm like you! I saw the movie THEN the musical THEN read the book, and I know which I like. What I love best is how the chandelier falling is a BIG HUGE DRAMATIC MOMENT in the musical but it gets, like, all of a paragraph in the book.

I also love what a hilarious little crybaby Raoul is.

Re: #8

[identity profile] linen-tartaruga.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
XD I actually saw the musical first, but yeah, I see where you're coming from. Even though I absolutely love that part of the musical. That was really the first thing that put me off to the movie was during the overture when the chandelier rises and the theater restores itself. It just doesn't have the same impact as it does in person.

But, oh yes, book!Raoul is so much more awesome than musical!Raoul.

[identity profile] enjolras.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
*CLINGS BACK* It's probably because I saw the musical first, but the movie is SUCH a poor adaptation. At least to me, it was! The singing is mainly what I had a problem with, since it kinda sucked. :\

Re: #8

[identity profile] cftf.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Some of the singing was all right, but whatshisface just was... a poor replacement for someone like Michael Crawford.

[identity profile] enjolras.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
adgsajhdjk yessss. I couldn't agree MORE. They don't even compare really. I mean, it's not that his voice is bad. It just needs some work, imo.

Re: #8

[identity profile] linen-tartaruga.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto, I mean I understand people are going to like different things and different styles. But . . . they were all flat. x.X

Re: #8

[identity profile] enjolras.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I knooow. So many of the songs were ruined. ;__; But you know, even if I can't stand the movie, I'm kind of glad it was made. So then people who can't see the musical on Broadway or whatever can still enjoy Phantom. :) It's just... not for me, aha~

Re: #8

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
That's how I felt. Like the play is 1000X better. But you can't just be like "Hey I'm in the mood to go see Phantom today, let's hop on a plane to NY..."

Re: #8

[identity profile] enjolras.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I know! Like the only reason I got to see it was because of my senior class trip to NY. Otherwise, I'd probably be another squeeing movie fan. It's a good movie FOR a movie... but the play omg, it makes it that much more awesome. *_*

Re: #8

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen the traveling show a few times when it's come through here, but that shit expensive and only happens like...once every 10 years. The DVD is $20 and I can watch all the time :D

I'm just emo I never got to saw Micheal Crawford in it. Seen him live, seen it live, but never together.

Re: #8

[identity profile] enjolras.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, that's about the one good thing the DVD is for. :DD It compensates very well, aha.

Oh man, I'd LOVE to see Michael Crawford in it just once. I saw it last year, so I definitely didn't get to. But after downloading the original soundtrack, I'm an obsessed fan. You're really lucky to have seen him live, even if it wasn't PotO~ :D!

Re: #8

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I was almost too young to remember it, but luckily, for whatever reason it logged in there (I think the fact I was raised on his voice. Some babies have Mozart, I had Crawford)

I know they have it with him on tape somewhere, I wish they'd release it...:(

Re: #8

[identity profile] chicafrom3.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, thank you.

I'm terribly confused by what the intention of the secret maker was. I mean, it's perfectly valid not to like Rent, but s/he's very unclear as to what his/her reason is, makes a completely wrong generalization about the fandom, and then bashes Larson. (Larson, who is utterly brilliant.)

I mean, hell, I spent today listening to a recording of La Boheme and then Larson Sings Larson. Yes. It's perfectly valid to be familiar with both Puccini and Larson and to LIKE THEM BOTH.

Also, there is no way in hell that RENT is the worst musical ever. Funny Girl and The Dead are the worst musicals ever. And the worst musical-made-movie was Phantom.

Oh, God, Weber. I hate Weber's work so much. And that movie pretty much made my eyes and ears bleed because it took WEBER who I already don't like and then made a shitty adaptation of it. *growls*
