I'd say it's in the middle; certainly it's not as popular as the major sips like SasuNaru, NaruHina, NaruSaku, SasuSaku, etc., but it's not like it has a tiny fanbase, either - there are a decent amount of supporters.

I agree that supporters tend to deviate from the paths of IC and logic. You can start off with a good concept (e.g., Naruto and Gaara would understand each other well because they both are/have been jinchuuriki.) and over time it tends to become exaggerated until you have something quite apart from what you began with. I think also people tend to forget that while yes, they do have an emotional connection, they really don't talk or interact much in canon, and if people want to write fic for them they have to develop that connection; it's not just given to you.

Frankly, some of the fanfiction I see on FF.Net utterly terrifies me. D:

Yeah, you're right, it's probably somewhere around the middle as far as popularity goes. Are you the OP? I'll admit that I am a SasuNaru tard through and through, but I'm definitely a multishipper and NaruGaa was one of my first OTPs.

YES I AGREE SO GODDAMN MUCH.

I love their bond, I love what they go through together, but it's hard to ignore that beyond the bijuu connection they really ... don't know each other at all. I tend to think that Gaara idealizes Naruto a little bit himself, which I don't blame him for because he's so very stunted. But if he did spent a significant amount of time with Naruto? I see him getting annoyed and confused often, and them having a lot of misunderstandings because they are fundamentally so different with such drastically different personalities.

I know. D: D: It's kind of why I love them together, because they had this real connection that would make for really interesting interaction that they would have to overcome because of their differences, but I so rarely see anybody handle it that way. Sigh.
