Waifu

I can never tell if people are being serious or sarcastic when they refer to a fictional character as their waifu.

I always assume sarcastic, but...

Are there any instances of someone genuinely using the term seriously? Is this like the anime-fandom equivalent of marrying Snape on the astral plane, or is it a joke that I'm too stupid to get?

For some people it's a joke and others take it extremely serious. Like that dide that married his dakimakura or the one who married that Love Plus game character.

It's mostly a joke for me. If I like a character a whole lot, sometimes I'll say they are my wife or husband.

I've got the same opinion.

I would imagine that sarcasm/having fun/joking would be a pretty safe assumption.

For most people it's not serious (but I wouldn't call it sarcastic either). Go to /a/ and you'll find plenty of examples of people who take it very seriously though.

People can be serious about it but it's mostly a joke/poking fun at yourself.

I usually don't take it seriously unless they're around dakimakura owning levels and even then I go off of how they treat the whole thing.

I'd say most people are being sarcastic or silly if they call a character their waifu. I mean, some people do go all the way and say Twilight Sparkle is their true love or love their body pillows in extreme ways. But for most, it's just a fandom way of saying you really like a character.

I feel that it has transcended sarcasm for some people. Like, they'll say a character is their "waifu" in a joking and self-deprecating manner, and then they'll go and spend hundreds of dollars on figures and body pillows of that character. I know this one girl who did this, and she admitted she got irrationally pissed off when other people called this character their "wife" or "girlfriend."

I feel like there's a lot of people who use it completely as a joke, and a few people who use it totally seriously, and a decent number of people who are somewhere in between, where they say it's a joke but they're also weirdly serious about it and the joking aspect covers that up, or they've been joking so long it's become kind of real.

Because the Internet.

I use the term in kind of a silly fashion but wouldn't call it a joke or sarcastic. I don't use it to mean "I actually think I'm married to this character or want to marry this character" but do use it about a character I really genuinely enjoy.

It's both serious and sarcastic at the same time, ime? It's sort of like saying you're a Trekkie or a Moonie, you're saying you really really like something (sometimes to the point where you're willing to throw hundreds or thousands of dollars at it), but the very use of the term is conveying kind of a self-deprecating humor.

Waifus and Husbandos are kind of like being an OTT fan of a particular character. Some people are going to have Waifus/Husbandos and it consists of a minor crush on a fictional character, other people are going to own a love pillow of that character and buy them a birthday cake every year. It all depends on the person.

Usually self-depreciating, as in 'I am a -huge- fan of this character, please don't judge me.'

...Although there are people toward the slightly odder Snapewives thing, as there are for anything.

I reserve "Waifu/Husbando" for my most favorite characters, but it's not like I actually think I'm married to them or anything? ^^;; It's just a silly term of endearment for me.
