Only familiar with Sheldon, and obviously I'm not familiar with your situation. But 99% of the people I've heard say "you remind me of a female Sheldon" or some variation thereof have absolutely zero understanding of the truly negative connotations of that comparison beyond 'lol awkward nerd' and don't mean it to be a huge insult. Still doesn't mean that's it's not, obviously, but a lot of the time it's an honest mistake that's quickly fixed with a 'hey please don't call me that' (unless there's something else going on, which I'm guessing there is, from OP's comment).

My grandma occasionally calls me Sheldon when I get particular about something, but she always says it with a little smile. She loves the show, so doesn't see it as an insult, just a bit of a joke. Obviously it could be used as an insult, and I don't know OP's situation, but as you say, I think a lot of people - especially people who have positive feelings for the show - aren't angling for that.

That being said though, I can completely understand the OP's frustration at having people who should know them well misrepresenting their character in a negative light, especially if their family are unpleasant in other ways too.
