My sister's friend apparently thinks I'm a female Sheldon. I'm... trying not to take it as an insult?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
damn that escalated quickly.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hope there are many other thing contributing to the fact that you're refusing to speak to many members of your family other than that they've just compared you to awkward fictional characters. Although if that is the only reason, then I can already see your resemblance to those characters as they all have reacted over dramatically or bizarrely to minor offenses

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
This, seriously.

Are you serious?

Hey, here's a tip: how about ASK them what they meant by it before refusing to speak to them? Human beings have this rather useful little invention called language that really comes in handy sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, wow. If you really have no one else to talk to besides your family, you may want to think twice before burning all those bridges. Or get some friends.

I kind of hope this secret is a troll or an exaggeration of true events because, if it isn't, that's really sad.

Sounds like you have some other issues going on here if this is hurting you so much and you're overreacting like this. Maybe instead of focusing on your family members and what they may or maynot mean, take some time to focus on yourself and why this is upsetting you so much and why you feel the need to take such extreme (and rather childish) measures.

The characters are not inherently bad, but the fact that you automatically see them as bad says more about how you see yourself than how your family does, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
wah I was compared to a fictional character

wahhhh I'm never talking to them again!

wahh why do they think so poorly of me

....Am I missing anything about this secret, or did that sum it up?

Ooooorrrr you could ask them what they mean. Or you could tell them they hurt you. Or you could not be a big baby.

People can't apologize and change if you don't tell them they did something wrong. Though, with what little information I have I would say they have nothing to apologize for.

I don't know the two on the side, but if someone called me a female Sheldon, damn right I would take it as an insult. He's not the worst on TBBT, but he's still horrible. Ugh, this series.

Only familiar with Sheldon, and obviously I'm not familiar with your situation. But 99% of the people I've heard say "you remind me of a female Sheldon" or some variation thereof have absolutely zero understanding of the truly negative connotations of that comparison beyond 'lol awkward nerd' and don't mean it to be a huge insult. Still doesn't mean that's it's not, obviously, but a lot of the time it's an honest mistake that's quickly fixed with a 'hey please don't call me that' (unless there's something else going on, which I'm guessing there is, from OP's comment).

My mom told me that Amy Farrah Fowler is her favorite character because (apart from the interest in and insistence on talking about sexual stuff) she's EXACTLY like I was as a teenager. I thought it was amusing and cute, personally. People often have a great affection for odd characters. It doesn't mean they have a low opinion of you, just that they think you share some traits with the characters, and unless they made sure to say "the bad traits!" it doesn't necessarily have to have been an insult at all.

Edit: Okay so I read some of your comments and I agree, they were being jerks. Nvm then.

I'm sorry so many people here are dumping on you for this, OP. You've clarified that there's more going on with your family than just a couple of unflattering comparisons. Sometimes breaking off contact with people who mistreat you is the healthiest thing you can do for yourself. I hope things improve for you.

My family is like that too. I think once I've been compared to Sheldon. Then again my family teases each other a lot so I know it was not meant to be hurtful.

Hell, when I see a weird or strange character I tell my sister and mom that they remind me of them and then we have a laugh about it.

I don't know how your family is. If they were genuinely mocking you then I understand why you would want to distance yourself, but if they were saying it to be teasing then I don't think it was meant in a harmful way.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
that's sad. if you're really like buster, you could use family to give you a hand.

Uh, have you tried asking them?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-01-12 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who the character on the right is at all, but what I know of the other two, there are a good traits and bad. It might be that even if you see these characters in a negative light, the people who compared you to them genuinely see these characters positively, or at least were thinking of/talking about the more positive associations when making such a comparison.

Have you tried just asking how/why you are alike to them? i.e. what specific traits brought up the comparison? For all you know, while you're thinking that they're calling your narcissistic by comparing you to Sheldon, they're actually complimenting you on your intelligence or straight-foward thinking (which as its own trait, some people take as a compliment and some as an insult).

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, my family has nicknamed my defacto Sheldon. Basically because he is crazy smart and can and will launch into a lecture about something that no one else cares about with such *passion* that we just let him go on with it and try to keep up.

He also really likes trains. He took me to the miniature train park on one of our first dates and we were the only people riding it that didn't have kids with them.

[personal profile] diabolicalfiend 2014-01-12 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it doesn't seem like they respect you very much. I don't know if cutting them off is the answer, but I suppose getting yourself in a position where you can stand on your own two feet and then trying to talk to them then, might help you.

It might end up just being a commentary on what they perceive to be awkwardness on your part, but if you're feeling put down, it's a good a idea to do something about that and taking your confidence back into your own hands.

I have no familiarity with The Big Bang Theory and haven't seen The Hangover since it came out, but I adore Buster Bluth. I know they probably didn't mean it this way when they compared you to him, OP, but keep in mind that multiple times throughout the series Buster is shown to be the only character in Arrested Development who is kind and at any point unselfish, so take heart in that.

I've been compared to Sheldon too. I take it as a compliment and I'm pretty sure it was meant as a compliment (at least in my case).

Buster is a QT and I don't see anything wrong with being like him either.
