I don't know the two on the side, but if someone called me a female Sheldon, damn right I would take it as an insult. He's not the worst on TBBT, but he's still horrible. Ugh, this series.

(Not OP)

My parents compare me to Sheldon all the time. They don't understand why I find that insulting, no matter how many times I try to explain it to them.

I don't think they realize that the characters on TBBT are horrible people.

Yeah. My brother and father are big fans of the show and I'm not entirely sure if they know that as well. :/ (And I really can't understand why they find Sheldon funny. I just hate his arrogance.)

Yeah, but people who like the show tend to like Sheldon the best. So to them...probably not insulting?

I mean, I've had people compare me to Hermione from Harry Potter before, when I was younger. I hate her with a fiery passion, but I know they don't.

Probably, but just because they mean well doesn't mean that that overrides my feelings about the character, if you know what I mean? It's kinda like my mom; she likes to tease me because in contrast to her I'm a picky eater, but because of the words and comparisons she chooses, it only comes across as condescending most of the time. I know she doesn't want to insult me, but she does.

We often say things that are insulting to others and for me and others a comparison to Sheldon Cooper would fall into that category. The easiest way to avoid that would probably be a good conversations, but unfortunately that's often not easy. :/ I would love to say "don't take it to heart" but if it happens all the time you can't help but feel hurt and annoyed.

Out of curiosity...why?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
i've been compared to a female Sheldon. i am no fan of tbbt but i didnt take it as an insult because the person in question was trying to point out my analytical or stereotypically "smart" person behavior. i saw what they were trying to get it.

oddly enough, later that day i was compared to the blonde (penny?).
