And the song was about her turning her back on civilization, not joining it as her true self.

This. It's not "coming out" when you isolate yourself on top of a mountain in your ice castle.

She literally shut the door on society. Isolation equals freedom for her, but isolation and coming out doesn't fit.

Depends on the environment you live in. In my old country I would have to shut off loads of people from my life in order to feel free in living my life.

And that is the irony that eventually comes out later in the movie.

As someone said a day or two ago, the stages of Elsa's character arc is:

1. In a crowd, alone.
2. In an ice-palace on a mountain, alone.
3. With people (and here sister), accepted and not alone anymore.

"Let It Go" is only stage 2.
