Recent Fandom Disappointments?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Has one of the shows/other series you're in the fandom for disappointed you in the past couple of months? What was the fandom, what was the disappointing thing, and why were you disappointed?

It doesn't count if a fandom is just continuing to disappoint you, after being disappointing for some time. Also, it doesn't have to be currently airing/being released, as long as the disappointment you experienced was recent.

Season 3 of Sherlock has been such a letdown. I'm not sure how big a role the fact that nothing could live up to the overhyping played in my disappointment, but I'm pretty sure it's objectively worse than it was the last two seasons.

Episode 1 was just a huge blah to me, the reactions didn't make sense, the plot was stupid. But I thought that the second episode was gorgeous. One of the best so far.

Agreed on both counts. Well idk if The Sign of Three was one of the best, but I felt it did return to the series' tone after how terrible The Empty Hearse was. It was so ... campy, and Sherlock was an even bigger dick than usual.

I'm so glad I only dipped my toes in the fandom, and then quit after Season 2.

Scandal in Belgravia and The Blind Banker are embarrassing.

Legend of Korra.

Yet still vainly optimistic for season 3.

Agreed. I actually liked most of season 1, but season 2 has just not been good. I'm currently re-watching ATLA because its just so much better and awesome and a better use of my time.

Yeah. I wanted to like it so, so bad. And there were moments towards the middle when it was getting good, and the characterization was looking up - I really liked Verrick, I liked where (I thought they were) taking Korra's character, but then it kind of fizzled.

It's so strange for me that they're just not managing to do all the things that made me love ATLA. The character relationships, the general solidity of the story. Korra just feels all over the place, and unlike ATLA where I found almost everybody sympathetic, in Korra hardly anybody stays sympathetic for long...

Legend of Korra for me has been one big, confusing ball of things I really like interspersed with things that deeply disappoint me. I'm mostly just continuing to watch out of desperate optimism and willingness to run off in wildly AU directions in my head.

I watched the first few eps of S2 and haven't gotten around to the rest yet, even though they've been sitting on my DVR for ages. I really wanted to love Korra the way I did the original series but it just keeps failing at all the things the first series did so well.

Hahaha, 3A of Teen Wolf. I adored the 3B season premiere (until the very end, bluh) so I'm cautiously optimistic but have also reached that "not giving a fuck about the plot, I'm here for Scott and Stiles" point.

Shingeki no Kyojin.

First we had chapters of unending battles that I just found boring, and now we've got a few more chapters of "oooh let's dangle more bits of information that lead you nowhere". We're 50 chapters in and no clue of wtf is going on, and at this point I'm just getting annoyed. I don't care for little ~tidbits~ that I need to piece together, especially since so far I haven't seen enough to convince me that the resulting picture will really be worth the effort. Too many deus exes so far.

I'm not terribly annoyed with how the series has been going so far, but it's irritating me that like the last three chapters have basically been 'one person sits in a bed while everyone else explains/flashbacks something important that happened in the meantime.' At this rate I half expect chapter 54 to open with Armin and Jean sitting in bed while Mikasa and Levi explain how they saved them. Please find a new dramatic device, Isayama.

Re: Recent Fandom Disappointments?

[personal profile] ketita 2014-01-12 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, agreed. But Isayama has a bit of a tendency in general to overuse plot devices (like "foiled by hitherto unknown titan powers" for example).
I will laugh and laugh if next chapter features somebody in bed I think he's just not a very polished storyteller, which makes sense.

SNK SPOILERS YO

[personal profile] blunderbuss 2014-01-12 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we finally heard Christa's story and ... heard that she had a shitty childhood and a bunch of shadowy dudes wanted her dead?

We've gotten a few interesting tidbits here and there, especially after the priest guy was tortured, but no real LEADS.

And when Eren and Christa were seemingly kidnapped I nearly screamed NOT AGAIN at the top of my lungs until I learned that they were decoys and this was all planned out. It's almost as if the characters themselves can feel my massive frustration as to why everyone wants Eren that they came up with this just for answers.

Hell, some people wanted Bert and Reiner to succeed in taking Eren just so we could see WHO they're working for and WHY and I actually agree.

Honestly I can't wait until the anime does these scenes - it's much better at expanding some parts while shrinking others, and goddamn do these parts need some editing.

+1 to all your points.
The "big reveal" with Christa didn't actually reveal much of anything yet. And as for the kidnapping, I will admit that it's a relief that this was planned, but I still feel that the kidnapping/decoy thing is getting repeated a bit often. This is the third kidnapping and the second decoy situation. We could use some variety in here...

And so much yes on the Reiner and Bert, I was practically banging my head into the table with annoyance when we didn't LEARN much of anything. I understand it's supposed to tantalize the readers, but so far it's just aggravating me.

Even though the anime had some wonky pacing issues (and I don't like how they derailed Eren's character at the end there), it really made a lot of the story much more streamlined and pleasant to follow.

As someone who grew up reading The Hobbit as a kid... the films are disappointing. I really, really wanted them to be amazing. And they're not... terrible. They're just okay.

But not as good as Lord of The Rings. It makes me a bit sad.

(However - I feel like comparisons with the Star Wars prequels are a bit unwarranted. Nothing is as bad as Hayden Christensen's acting. Nothing.)

Supernatural.

After all the buzz about season 8, I binge watched (for the first time) the entire series over the summer. And then season 9 happened. I regret all the hours I spent watching that bullshit.

The ~BelieveBenson~ episode of SVU was such a shitshow. Really, I don't know why I expected better. Why write a realistically complex trial when they can give us cheap theatrics instead?
