I've just started listening to Night Vale and enjoy quite a bit of the imagery but wasn't sure about dipping my toes into the fandom... What happened with said artist?

Now, I just figured this out yesterday while I was snooping around tumblr for art so I may not have all the facts. But as far as I can tell, the artist was cool enough but had a seriously offensive name. Nazi-Nurse. Well, she changed it to something else but that wasn't good enough for people. She has a white headcanon Cecil so people started attacking her for that and for saying her Carlos wasn't "Mexican enough". The artist got really upset because it turns out she's Mexican. Now she just gets waves of anons who bash her. She doesn't take it seriously and mostly is an ass in all her replies, which, come on, after all of this you would too. Now they're mad at her for that. Also, apparently this whole thing was started by three popular tumblr users who I don't know, nor care about.

Again, this is all I could get from snooping for a few minutes on tumblr yesterday. I didn't watch it unfold so I have no idea what really went down.

Oh! In other news, apparently a Neo-Nazi is bashing people in the POCecil tag. I wish I was making this up.

My advice to you for Night Vale fandom is be careful who you follow. I have a shit ton of art but I generally stay away from a lot of discussion unless it's with people on F!S or RL friends.

Yeeeeaaaaahhhh, tumblr does that. They do it a lot with Carlos. He's apparently never "dark enough".

Every time I hear someone say he's not dark enough or *insert race here* enough, they're giving me the impression that they mean he's not "stereotypical" enough.

That's like when people ask "What are you?" and you tell em, and they're like, "Oh you don't look *insert race here*"

I generally don't know what to think of it and just stay out of it. I just stick to reblogging all Carlos I see.

Apparently there are white people out there that think us Latin@s just come in one homegeneous colour palette. It's damn common when it comes to drawing Carlos.

Seriously. "Not Latino/a enough" just makes me wonder if you've given any actual thought to your social justice. You can't just reblog and fervently agree with whatever looks slightly good.

While I agree that there are certain features that are more typical of our originary nations (be it from the Aztec-Mayan cluster, Taínos, Tupís, Quechuas, Mapuches - and even then, those features vary wildly depending on the nation); and that the huge majority of us will not EVER pass as white (I certainly don't, and I'm quite proud of that!), not even while briefly sighted... There's no such thing as "this is how an authentic Latino looks".

First: Latin America is damn huge. Second: We're mutts. Our firsts nations were colonized and abused by the Spaniards (or Portuguese, French or English), got mixed with them; and then a lot of areas on coastal zones got a big deal of black genes due to the bloody slave trade. And then we got immigrants from Asia (mostly Middle East, Chinese and Japanese colonies) - but also from empoverished whiteys running away from Europe in the XIX century that also contributed a lot--- idk. Cultural and racial identity in Latin America is hard even for us; but on the other hand, we usually dislike being typecasted. Every iteration of Carlos I've seen could plausibly be Latino! And believe me, I've seen every Pantone for his skin color. So hearing every time "he's not dark enough!1!" is quite weird for us.

Now, sure, some of them do show Carlos as a pale-skinned white dude. But some of them are obviously giving him a darker skintone, or are just a black and white sketchs with no shading and they're STILL given the 'Carlos is not white' shit.

And naturally when people ask how in the fuck can someone be the Color Judge of a character with no official art and when latino/latina complain that not everyone is the same shade, they get lectured about white-washing and colourism and how they're not doing it right.

I took a look and was pretty disgusted by the whole thing.

Yes, Prof. Sycamore does not look like a Latino dude. ANY Latino dude. And brownface is not ok.

But there's a lot of fanart on that blog that does not deseve to be there, either because they're uncolored sketches (with Carlos looking non-white despite the lack of colors), or because the mod's monitor must be failing.

I mean. This is how Santiago's Downtown looks and I can assure you that +95% of the people on this pics are recognizably Latin American non-white-passing while having a wide arrange of... variety.

Fun story: I was once told by someone that they didn't like a series because it didn't have enough minorities. When I pointed out that 4 of the 6 main characters were minorities, they went on a rant about how none of those characters counted because this one wasn't black enough, this one was a bitch, blah de blah. Coming off of praising a story where there were only two minorities, one of whom was an unlikeable bigot. What?

I'd certainly side-eye the fuck out of someone with a nickname like "Nazi-Nurse", no matter if they were a great artist. It could be a "humorous", "LOOK AT ME I'M SO EDGY LOL!1!!!" nickname, which is pretty damn awful already, and I don't want to associate with someone like that... or it could be someone who secretly (or not so secretly) thinks nazis were cool, which is even worse and I wouldn't touch their art with a 10 foot pole.

I agree that's shitty to attack her Carlos for not being "Mexican" enough. And then, the fact that the artist herself was Mexican makes it even more offensive.

An actual openly Neo-Nazi in Tumblr goes against the site's policies, tho', so I hope they at least got kicked out.

Yeah, I never was comfortable with their name and I'm super happy they changed it. I never talked to them or followed them. I just knew of them ‘cause they did a lot of Night Vale art. (The only reason I found out about the name change is because I thought someone was stealing their art, which has been done before. Turns out it was them on the new name.)

Yup. They started putting their side bar in Spanish and stuff to get people to stop being dicks to them.

That's what I thought! But this person (Who is completely unrelated to the person above.) won't let up and a lot of people have reported them. Tumblr is either slow or uncaring. Apparently they're spamming the POCecil tag and being a ginormous dick. Not only saying that all characters should be white but that Cecil obviously is "because reasons". They shit on the creators for being inclusive. They're really into "white people are superior" and don't care about any of the people in the POCecil tag and their pleas to leave them alone. I feel really bad for the people in that tag right now. I've been avoiding the tag because I don't want to run into that shit.

Everything about this is the most awful, and it saddens me a lot. I'm... kind of speechless, TBH.

I guess the only thing those people in the POCecil tag can do before the Tumblr mods deign to make a move and delete the blog of that harrasing piece of human scum, is to mass-block them.
