When I first saw FotR, I assumed everyone would be shipping Frodo/Sam. Some people did, but not many and I was unprepared for the massive tidal wave of Aragorn/Legolas fic. I should have known. Not only do people prefer slashing pretty white boys, they want ones that aren't short with hairy feet. (I'm very amused by all the dwarf shipping in the Hobbit fandom, now.)

One of the things that kept me out of LotR for a good while was the ubiquitousness of Aragorn/Legolas.

It took a pairing that I feel sad there was never more of to lure me in - Aragorn/Boromir. Though I blame the lack of it on the seeming unwillingness to mess with Boromir's canon death, and not wanting to ship an ill-fated pairing. Well frag that, I now happily ship Boromir and another ill-fated character in an AU where they don't die... or at least they both get reborn.
