Pairings you thought would have been popular

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...but they aren't. At least not as popular as you thought they could have been.

Also pairings that are waaay more popular than you thought they would be.

I will always be baffled that JD/Turk was so rare in Scrubs fandom. They have a whole damn song about how much they love each other! In any other fandom the slashers would be eating that up.

Cloud/Barret, Final Fantasy VII. The only "canon" gay relationship in the series, but no one considers it and newfans aren't even aware that it's a date option.

As for pairings that are more popular than I would've thought are.. most pairings. lol When I have an OTP, it always seems so obvious to me that I can't imagine why people have other ships. haha

Merlin/Lancelot for Merlin BBC. Granted, it's like fourth in my favorite ships list from the show, but you would think it'd be a bit more popular than it seems to be. I think Merlin and Arthur's very canon love for each other overwhelms the fandom.

For way more popular than I think they would be? Sam/Gabriel from Supernatural. It's the worst kind of pair the spares.

at the very beginning I thought Scott/Stiles would be the most popular slash pairing in teen wolf or maybe even Scott/Derek. I...have never been more wrong. I severely underestimated how much fandom enjoys the whole snarky and broody combination or how lukewarm much of fandom would be towards Scott's character

I'm surprised how little Bard/Thranduil there is. Like hot grumpy dads together is not people's thing? I didn't except it to be this next big thing, but there's 5 fics I know of (of which one is WIP and three are part of a series). Granted, they didn't even meet yet, but that hasn't stopped anyone before. There's some demand for it on the kink meme, but not much. Maybe it'll be more popular after the next movie.

I remember being really baffled how popular Thorin/Thranduil was after the first movie. But I think it's just me not getting pairings that start on an antagonistic base.

comicverse Sam Guthrie/Bobby Drake and Alex Summers/Bobby Drake

Regarding the former, there were a few issues back in the day that were fairly shippy (among other things, including panels where Sam cradled an injured Bobby to his chest and later waited hours by his bedside). With the later it's mostly a foe yay appeal because they were generally pretty snarky towards each other and both were in love with the same woman. I guess I'm not shocked that there isn't more fic since the comicverse side of fandom isn't very active and when it is it's mostly Gambit/Wolverine and most of the slashfic with Bobby involves Northstar but still

Pairings way more popular: The TV series Revolution, I'm constantly surprised at how popular Charlie/Sebastian "Bass" Monroe is. Granted the show sort of points towards it.

Still surprised at the difference in fics recently that feature the two of them compared to what I thought would be way more popular of Miles/Bass.

Dr. Watson/Sir Henry Baskerville from Sherlock Holmes. Watson was so obviously smitten with him and his fiery eyes and stuff. And he was talking about how he would be, like, honored to die for him about two days after he first met him. This kind of thing seems par the course for Watson (see also: Mary Morstan).

I never thought Armin/Mikasa would be super popular, but I did think more people would ship it since they care for each other and go out of their way to defend each other. They've certainly interacted more than characters in more popular pairings. Alas, it's largely ignored compared to Eren/Mikasa and Eren/Armin.

I never expected Eren/Levi to be as ubiquitous as it is, but I guess it makes sense in that Eren's the protagonist and Levi's the fan favorite. People tend to pair those types off regardless of how sensical it is.

I'm a bit surprised that there isn't more fic for Fenris/Sebastian. They had some nice party dialogue once Fenris got warmed up towards him.

Similarly, I'm a bit surprised that Anders/Fenris is so popular. I mean, I get that fandom has always been into rivalshipping but damn. The thing is that I might actually be into the pairing if Anders was kept even remotely in character. He's a bitter, unhinged, passionate dick in canon (well, DA2's canon anyway) not a woobie doormat.

Not sure if this counts but, Cable/Deadpool. Sort of. The ship is popular, but it's not the massive ubiquitous thing I expected it would be. There's much more Spideypool on both AO3 and tumblr, which I find somewhat baffling since there's much more canon evidence for Cablepool than Spideypool.

(And yes, I'm aware that Deadpool has canonically flirted with Spider-Man, but doesn't he flirt with pretty much everyone?)

I'm perpetually confused by what is and isn't popular in Mass Effect fandom - aside from the canon Shepard ships, anyway.

But Javik/Liara, for one - it's got a decent following I guess but it baffles me how many people never even considered it until they saw it in fanworks. I guess I can forgive that if you're romancing Liara, but otherwise? It seemed so obvious to me that I can't believe how many people don't see it at all.

On the "why is this popular" side - well, not that it's popular, but I'm consistently baffled and vaguely disappointed that Kal'Reegar/Veetor is a thing. literally any other quarian slash ship would make more sense and involve characters I find more interesting.... oh well.

Legend of Korra for me was Bolin/Varrick. That old guy was totally into that cub I'm just saying. Where's all the fic and meta? Where's my browseable tumblr tag >:U /entitlement

Teen Wolf where is the Scott/Danny? Yes, I understand that Stiles is the fan favourite, and has chemistry with everyone, but Scott/Danny. Even Coach ships that a little. The prom scene? "Danny, dance with me?" Fucking adorable. And what about the tackling, where Scott is sniffing all up on all his teammates, but notes how good Danny smells? And Danny is totally okay with this entire situation. Come oooonnnnn

And Lydia/Cora. This is like, for me, the lady Sterek equivalent. If they can have all the made up subtext, so can Corydia! Oh I'd love to make a role switch au for the girls and guys in this show...

MCU Fury/Coulson. That's all.

Another one I just remembered: Sully/[anyone other than Stahl or Virion] from Fire Emblem: Awakening. In a game where each character has about 11 marriage options, it's disappointing to see her only getting paired with the same two people. Meanwhile Sully/Vaike, which is adorkable and awkward and my OTP, is completely nonexistent. It is sad day. :(

On a positive note, I was expecting Aoi/Sakura from Dangan Ronpa to be a niche pairing that I'd have to commission, not a fandom darling with tons of cute fanart. Heart cockles: warmed.

Thorin/Thranduil. It exists, but not as much as I thought it would. Thorin/Bilbo is awesome too, but for hate sex you can't beat Thorin/Thranduil. And isn't hate sex what is usually really popular?

When I first saw FotR, I assumed everyone would be shipping Frodo/Sam. Some people did, but not many and I was unprepared for the massive tidal wave of Aragorn/Legolas fic. I should have known. Not only do people prefer slashing pretty white boys, they want ones that aren't short with hairy feet. (I'm very amused by all the dwarf shipping in the Hobbit fandom, now.)
