I have an iPad and it works great as a laptop substitute but even though I have no personal experience, I'm sure some of the cheaper options would be good as well. Just wanted to say those reasons you listed against the iPad are not problems in the slightest: even though I'm a firm PC user, I had absolutely no problems with Apple or iTunes and the updates are few and far between for the iPad. Anyway, good luck deciding.
