Notes:
Tumblr and/or social justice in and of themselves aren't fandoms, unfortunately.

How does one obtain a beta?
(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)(Okay sure there's other reasons but honestly nothing fires my muse more than seething disappointment in the works of others. I am fix-it fic incarnate.)
Thing is, if I'm to get back into the game I need a beta. And I never needed to search for one before because I always had a close fandom friend to check it out for me. Now I don't and don't have the slightest idea of where to look.
Should I search for fandom specific ones? Or should I search for a general beta? I'm trying to improve my writing style so I'd need one who knows good writing flow/grammar/etc.
And this is just my introversion talking but I don't really want to create a writer/beta relationship or make friends or anything. I just want to plonk my fic down and declare open season and just have someone take it apart as needed. An english teacher if you will.
So, uh, yes. Help?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)And honestly, I don't really want a fandom-specific beta? Sure, it's my fandom now, but maybe I'll write fics for other stuff in the future.
Re: ^ OP
There are benefits to having a fandom-specific beta, depending on what kind of help you're looking for with your fics. Someone who knows the fandom can pick out characterization and continuity problems that a general SPaG/word-choice beta would miss. Is that something you would find valuable, or do you mostly just want the nuts-and-bolts of your writing itself looked at?

Sorry, I meant ask for one in you next fic post/update? My platform was a nearly dead fandom community on LJ and I was lucky to come across one. So I guess a relevant fandom forum, maybe tumblr or is there a forum on the fic website you can post a request?

Re: How does one obtain a beta?
Heck, I'd volunteer (snk fandom) but I have no idea what type of beta you're even looking for (SPAG bores me, but I love ironing out story/plot/characterization issues), and I've got time issues. Though I personally love the beta/writer relationship so sounds like I'm not for you anyway XD
As people have said, you can look through beta communities. I've found good people on ff.net, actually, but sometimes it's hard to know if they're still active accounts or not. You should probably look for somebody who's posted fic recently; higher chance of interest, there.
If it's shippy, you can post in shippy circles asking, because there's a concentration of people invested in reading that type of story. People want more shippy fic, and might be willing to invest in getting it. I've found that posting on Tumblr has been the least useful for me, personally, though.
Sorry I can't be more of a help... good luck!
