Hawkeye 2012. Spoilers.

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-01-12 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Spoilers. Spoilers. Spoilers.

I just finished number 10 and talk about kicking the dog. Grills was so nice! He was so normal and good-guy-ish. He reminded me of my daddy and now he's dead! I want to cry.

Talk to me about how awesome this comic is, FS. I'm not a big comic fan, but this might be my undoing.

It's one of the few comics that I read over and over again not because I love the story. Though I do. But because I love the layouts so much and I use it as a study guide on how to do interesting ones. It's like someone put a 70's heist/thriller/action movie to comic book form. And I can't think of the last time I've been this hung up over any other comic's layouts.

The layouts are great, and I love that the artists are keeping the art style simple. Sometimes there's just so much detail that I have trouble deciding what to look at. With Hawkeye, I can just sit back and take it all in without getting overwhelmed.

And when his work-wife, ex-wife, and girlfriend were together they had a definitive 70's vibe and looked like Charlie's Angels. Hawkeye's Angels.

I like that he's underpowered. He's like every late twenties to early thirties person who knows they should really have their shit together by now, but just keeps failing at life. He's a good guy, but his boss is ticked because he got arrested, his love life is a mess, and it seems like his protege is taking care of him rather than the other way around. He's relateable.

And being hit with a baseball bat hurts. A lot. I'm actually wondering how he's survived without acquiring brain damage.

I'm kind of hoping Cap shows up again, bops Clint on the head, and tells him to quit moping and clean up his life. That's what Cap does: makes everyone want to be better. And when Clint is better he'll go back to fighting Kree in space. That's my hope anyway.

Maybe it's just me, but haven't a lot of the Marvel comics lately been taking a turn for the realistic? Especially due to MCU influence about breadth and depth of powers, injury tolerance, etc. - people seem to be getting hurt and staying hurt more.

Though also, sliding timescale aside, Hawkeye is a lot older now than he used to be. The comics give off this "world weary and exhausted by life" vibe which I'm pretty sure is actually meant to go somewhere, character development and plot-wise.

Not sure what to say about Kate Bishop, though - I've loved her since Young Avengers, and this new Hawkeye run only made me a bigger fan of hers. I can see a variety of reasons why someone might dislike her character, but loathing seems...rather excessive.

"I don't hang out with him. He hangs out with me." <-----Best line in the comics.

I dunno, Hawkeye still looks (and acts) relatively young to me. But like I said, I'm not a major comics fan. He could be 80+ years old and have died three times and have six grown kids in the background. That seems to be the norm for super heroes.

Well during the Hawkeye run, Kate Bishop has also been in Young Avengers, running around with an interdimensional playboy helping a deaged Norse god that is a ghost of himself chase after a timespace eldritch abomination that may or may not have kidnapped her friend's unrelated-twin-brother.

...that makes more sense in context, I swear. Also, the last issue implies that she's at least bicurious, so apparently Young Avengers may actually end up being the first mainstream all-LGBT superhero team. :D

Comics always win for originality. It would be hard to find a cast like that in any other medium.

Just a tip: the way to spoiler cut is to reply to you own comment. This "leave a space" thing doesn't really work, unfortunately, especially for 1st language english speakers whose eye can be caught by entire sentences without meaning to read them even while they're scrolling past them, and comprehend them before realizing they're not supposed to be looking at it.

Whoops. I'm sorry. I don't normally bring the spoilers to the conversation. I'll remember that in the future.

I was legitimately shocked they killed Grills. Probably should've expected it since he got some character development and a good bit of page-time (I'm usually afraid minor characters will die at some point, especially if they're beloved like Grills), but nope...

A part of me is just glad that Lucky isn't dead too but Grills didn't deserve to go down like that. :(

Hawkeye is the most stylish comic out there right now (that I'm aware of, anyway. Which probably means I'm wrong). It really is delightful to look at and the story is so good. The simplicity works.

Oh, and #11 is extremely unusual and clever and I love it. Hopefully this series is going to be around for a while; it's really addicting.

Grills' didn't deserve that at all! He was so loveable! He's overweight, he's not handsome, he's not rich, but he's gonna go get his dad during the hurricane, and he's gonna try and rescue his mom's stuff, and he's gonna be nice to his neighbors and grill food for them, and give Hawkeye love advice. Grills was just....such a good guy. I was really upset when he died.

I stopped buying the comics at #10, because I want this read to be a good, slow burn.

If you really like simple art and unique layouts, you're going to love #11. ;)

Forget what I said about a slow burn. I was up late last night reading that comic and #11 made me tear up. That dog, man. That dog....
