Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane

Shitting on the canon girlfriend so the guys can get together.

Why is it so hard to just...write the canon relationship as never happening or have them part mutably? Why do you have to turn the girl into the petty bad girl stereotype?

Ugh this. It's why I prefer that the canon partner is left out of fic altogether, it's still rude to the(usually lady) in question but I find that it's less likely to result in character bashing.

At this point I'm more than likely to stop reading. If someone can't write it without bashing on the canon girlfriend (and sadly it does happen more often than not in slash) they're a shitty writer and I will drop the fic.

Especially since I like the canonpair and think the lady is awesome, even if I don't want to read it all the time. >:(

Oh I didn't meant to imply that character bashing is ever okay(especially for shipping reasons), if it happens when the lady isn't even in the fic I'm back-buttoning out so hard, never mind having her there and she's the most horrible human being ever.

I have a few slash pairs where I really like the canon lady-half but uuuugh the fandom treats her like shit and I just stopped reading fic.

I think the only one that doesn't make me raise an eyebrow when the lady isn't around is Newt/Hermann for Pacific Rim, because Vanessa isn't even in the movie, and while it's always fun to take the writer's bonus Extended Universe stuff into consideration, and while Vanessa sounds like a really cool character, it doesn't bug me if a writer decides to just not have her there. Although I've read cool stuff with Vanessa too.

But I HATE it when they make her some kind of awful person, or just flat out kill her (and sometimes the kid) to make room for Newt. Ew and gross.

I can agree to that. It's nice if an author does include Vanessa(and doesn't shit all over her) but it's not necessary when she isn't in one version of the canon, and not everyone will know about the stuff in the book. I didn't, I thought she was a fanon OC that lots of people liked or something.

Ha whenever I see fic like that I don't just backbutton I also blacklist the author, not reading anything of theirs again.

They've been doing this?!?!?!? D:< I backpeddled the fuck out of Hermann's tag when they started shitting on her for having the nerve to be a women model. they can just not write her! I imagine most fans haven't read the supplementary material or artbook!

It makes me so mad I hope she's in the next movie. At least Mr Beacham stomped down on the anti-Vanessa people and I know the fandom is having its teeth problems but jfc.

/lots of frustration with the fandom

I hate this so much. It's usually so easy to get around the canon relationship without making anyone evil. Bashing characters for the sake of a ship makes me want to hit the back button, even when it's a ship I love.

I thought I replied to you, huh.

It's a sign of a shitty author IMO. If they can't write THAT neatly then I doubt they're going to handle other bits neatly...or they're a sexist asshole inwhichcase no kudos for you. Backspace away!

It also reeks of insecurity -- if you need to justify a ship by shitting on the canon girlfriend, you're not really doing a good job of selling me on why your ship is so great.

I multiship so I don't even need things justified to me but if they're going to shit on Pepper or Natasha to justify any ship I'm going to back the fuck out and idly wish for a thumbs down button.

It just pisses me off so much >:(

Can I say one of the things I quite like about Clint/Coulson is that I find that Natasha is very rarely turned into The Terrible Person, or otherwise crapped upon, for the sake of the ship. Sometimes she's a bit too much of the cheerleader, but mostly she's just Clint's best friend and one of Coulson's top spies, and I am A-OK with that. (And sometimes with an ot3.)

And with Avengers fandom in general. I've been out for awhile, but it seems I remember Pepper being cool even if she wasn't with Tony as there was stuff where she was awful. Not 100% ideal, but better than most fandoms. (My gold standard for "how much can a fandom irrationally hate the 'Other Woman'" will always be Releena from Gundam Wing.)

Oh it is pretty good! They're just two of my three favourite characters so I can't stand it when an otherwise goodfic has them being turned into cliche "women in the way". I'd prefer if they'd just ignore them all together.
Natasha, though, certainly gets the better end of it! Peppe gets enough of "over controlling can't handle Iron Man gets up and leaves Tony forever no friendship nothing" that I want to frown. :(

Also she doesn't have a figurine. I don't even collect figurines but I want a Pepper! /firstworldbreakingintocollectionproblems

Ugh, I hate it when Pepper is painted as the bad guy for not being able to handle Tony.

Like. In what universe? In what universe is someone too controlling and demanding for not being able to handle being in a long-term relationship with an unstable adrenaline-junkie genius with PTSD and a budding substance abuse problem. Like, I love Tony, and I think he and Pepper are the sweetest thing (except sometimes when I like Tony and Bruce, and Tony/Cap are just 616 canon in all but name, for pity's sake). But seriously? Being in a relationship with Tony would be a massive, life-consuming challenge, and require accepting a hell of a lot of problems as "price of admission." It's positively heartwarming when he gets a relationship with someone who can do that, but it certainly isn't even remotely unreasonable for someone to decide that no, this is just Too Much.

That's what pisses me off so much when Pepper gets shorted. There is a perfectly reasonable way to move her slightly to the left if she's in the way of your slash ship. It's totally plausible for her to love Tony, but just need to not be in that relationship with him.

I think it speaks a bit to how young a lot of fic writers are. When you're younger, you figure someone has to be the "bad guy" for a relationship not to work. But eventually you learn that sometimes there are bad guys, and sometimes there are just two people who do like each other a whole lot, who are perfectly nice, but just don't work together as life partners, for whatever reason.
