Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane
YES. Although this is a weird one because there IS a way of doing it right, and it's totally dependent on how the action is structured. I've read a lot of good fics where the whole "sexual tension gets ratcheted as far as it can go, then something happens to push it past the breaking point and it all comes pouring out at once" things happens, and it feels right. (This also depends a lot on the prior relationship between the two characters.)
But 1. it's really overused just as it is, and 2. there are so many fics where this DOESN'T happen, where the revelation is the peak of the tension arc, but the "first kiss"/acknowledgement scene comes later in the denouement after a sharp climactic peak...and they then fuck immediately anyway. It always feels so forced and unnatural and tacked on. It's really hard to describe the distinction without giving a bunch of specific examples, but UGH it irritates me.
