Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane
Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane
YES. Although this is a weird one because there IS a way of doing it right, and it's totally dependent on how the action is structured. I've read a lot of good fics where the whole "sexual tension gets ratcheted as far as it can go, then something happens to push it past the breaking point and it all comes pouring out at once" things happens, and it feels right. (This also depends a lot on the prior relationship between the two characters.)
But 1. it's really overused just as it is, and 2. there are so many fics where this DOESN'T happen, where the revelation is the peak of the tension arc, but the "first kiss"/acknowledgement scene comes later in the denouement after a sharp climactic peak...and they then fuck immediately anyway. It always feels so forced and unnatural and tacked on. It's really hard to describe the distinction without giving a bunch of specific examples, but UGH it irritates me.
Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane
I don't mind the instant payoff so much, but I'm probably just easy to please in that regard. I will agree though that more fic could do with having the characters not just instantly jump into bed together after one kiss.
Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane
And I agree so much on the last part! And after reading a lot of fanfics today, it happens waaay too often!
*You know, opinions may differ, and others might like it. Only talking about myself in this instance.

"Bedroom now" is something that might be considered to be something that if said in Real Life to be so out there that he or she might laugh it off or find it insulting. Furthermore most people would agree with your last statement, Stella_ Down."

it would be really amusing if you did talk like that for a day
even in real life
just talk like that and see how people react

(Anonymous) 2014-01-13 02:10 am (UTC)(link)I'm sure it depends on the fandom and the characters, but for my OTP, there's already been plenty of build-up and UST in the canon. I am not a fan of "will they, won't they" stories, and if I'm going to read something about my OTP, I want something overtly romantic/sexual, not more hints and innuendos and long-drawn-out courtship. I can get that from the canon. I'm not saying it has to be a PWP, but I'm not reading ten chapters of the characters gazing longingly at each other and hesitating about whether or not to get together. I look to fanfic to provide me with things that the canon doesn't provide, not more of the same.
Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane
(Anonymous) 2014-01-13 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)In my fandom's original canon, the main pairing didn't even get to kiss! And it's a series that stretched out for a VERY long time. In this case, fans have had an overload of UST, so there is a correspondingly high amount of PWP in fanfic because we've had more than enough build-up in canon. :p
