Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane

Most of my pet peeves have been mentioned, so I will just add the one that has been annoying me lately: The word "cloth" when it isn't used to refer to a pile of fabrics, but for clothes. I understand that it is probably correct usage of that word, but who the fuck thinks: "I am removing his cloth" during sex? Seriously, who?

And why is it a thing?

is it just that I don't speak English as my native language and the translation doesn't fit to the use in Norwegian?

No, pretty sure it's not a translation issue, some people really do say "cloths" when they actually mean "clothes," and it drives me up a fucking wall. Same with "breath" when they mean "breathe." Those Es aren't there for decoration!

It is usually like this: "He put his hand under his cloth touching some kind of body part" and I am just sitting there going: Why can't you just write shirt/trousers/pants/whatever?

But as English is my second language I don't know if it is a correct way to write it or not...

It's not necessarily INcorrect, but it's extremely poor word usage. Basically an elementary school teacher would mark it as wrong.

Yeah, that is what I assumed. It is just so oddly placed that I lose my attention for a moment, because I can't imagine anyone undressing someone to think of clothes as cloths, except if it is whatever it is called, the skirt thing that Romans used: Linecloth? Thinking of it that probably wasn't Romans? Ah well...

Thank you for clarifying it for me, I have just seen it around everywhere lately, and it just feels odd reading it.

Haha loincloth, yeah. More like Tarzan than the Romans, I think. But you should definitely picture any reference to "cloth" as a loincloth.

And I would say that most uses of "cloths," plural, are misspellings of "clothes."

That is how it is spelt! Probably, I have no idea...

I think I could forgive the plural, it is when it is cloth it annoys me, because I don't put my hand under anyones cloth, I put my hand under their shirt...

Talking about words: Dress is the Norwegian word for Suit, so sometimes I get slightly confused to why someone is crossdressing without any kind of warning...

Edit: damn crossdressing isn't even the correct word... Well you get the point.

The word they're looking for is "clothes" (meaning garments), rather than "cloth" (meaning fabric) - when I see sentences like your example, I get mental images of characters draped in entire bolts of unworked textiles. But yeah, it would be simpler and clearer for the writer to just say which article of clothing the character is sticking their hand under.

I would believe that if I didn't see it in every other fic I read lately, and they contain no other misspellings or grammatical errors I notice. It feels like a trend, just like some other stuff that props up everywhere, but mostly contained to one fandom.

Clothes also feels odd to me* but at least that is correct and it doesn't make me go "wtf?" at the story for a moment.

*Because who thinks like that and also I want to know which article of clothing.
