So...people should either only write fic with cultural references that are specific to your country/culture/area, or interrupt the story with an infodump that will annoy everyone else?

Yes. That is exactly what I said. /s

You do realise there are ways to explain concepts in a story without an infodump, right? Basic storytelling 101? The colourguard are just the flag-bearers in the school band, so maybe they could describe it just like that, in simple terms that anyone outside the US could understand? Crazy, I know.

Speaking of which, I don't see how 'write your fic so that non-Americans can still understand concepts' somehow equals 'write for my culture only'.

It would maybe kill you to do a quick google search?

Nope. But guess what? Having to do that google search takes me straight out of the story and ruins the narrative. That is also storytelling 101.

I was reading this series of fics lately where a character was Jewish and practising some Jewish traditions, it wasn't important to the story to know exactly what they meant and the author had handy links at the bottom of each chapter, to explain the Jewish traditions: And they were all just a sentence or two long so it wasn't an entire Wiki article.

So that is also one way of doing it, it was also slightly explained during the chapters, but not too much as both characters knew the traditions (for the most part themselves).

Also a perfectly valid tactic.

You're so precious that having to do a google search "ruins" a story for you? Wow, just wow.

And let me guess, you're one of those Brits who pisses and moans about how substituting "lemon drop" and "sweater" for "sherbet lemon" and "jumper," for the benefit of American readers, is "dumbing down" the narrative.

Also, you're still coming off as a whiner who thinks all authors should cater to her.
