I have really curly (and long) hair, so what works for me is combing it while it's wet and with conditioner. After that, applying a little bit of water and letting the hair conditioner do its magic. After wash, I use Pantene Pro-V cream for curls and some silicon to keep it down. Depending on how big the your curls are, you can shape them with your fingers.

I do this thing where I shape four or five really thick curls with my fingers (after applying the cream and while it's wet, that is), and let them be until they are completely dry. After that, I split the curls into as many as I want.

I don't touch my hair at all until the next wash (3 or 4 days later because effort), so no combing or anything. That will only ruin your curls. ;(
