It's not romance in and of itself that's infuriating, it's the way it's popularly written, taking over an entire story that's ostensibly about much more important things, like, oh, say, the end of the human race. Are many people in real life complete self-absorbed nitwits who can't focus on anything but senpai noticing them while the whole world is ending? Sure. Is it unreasonable to be irritated to discover three hundred pages of mostly that crap when the book summary suggested an exciting post-apocalyptic adventure with a bit of kissy face on the side? Uh, no.
